Pulgarcito (Spain)
''Pulgarcito'' ( Spanish for " Tom Thumb") was a weekly illustrated magazine of Spain that was published by Editorial Bruguera (originally named ''El Gato Negro'', though it retained a black cat as its logo) from June 1921 to 1987. An extremely popular periodical in its first years, ''Pulgarcito'' offered short stories, articles, pastimes, and jokes, with only a few comic strips. Ediciones B is a Spanish publisher, which currently operates as a division of Penguin Random House. Ediciones B is headquartered in Madrid and Barcelona, Spain; with branches throughout Latin America. It was established in 1986, but has its origins in El Gato Negro (1910) and Editorial Bruguera (1940). Juan López Fernández (born 13 March 1939), better known by his pen name Jan, is a Spanish comic book writer and artist, most famous for his creation Superlópez. Biography He was born in the town of Toral de los Vados in the province of León. Completely deaf from the age of six, his parents encouraged him to draw and in 1956, he began to work in a studio in order to learn animation. He emigrated to Cuba in 1959 where he worked in ''Televisión Cubana'' (Cuban Television) and the ''Instituto Cubano de Arte e Industria Cinematográficos'' (ICAIC) (Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry). He also collaborated on some periodicals for children at this time, and later, on comic books and newspaper supplements. Jan returned to Spain in 1969, and worked in the now defunct publishing house Editorial Bruguera until 1985 where he helped illustrate the work of other comic book artists. Francisco Ibáñez Talavera, signing as just Ibáñez, (born 15 March 1936) is a Spanish comic book artist and writer. Biography Born in Barcelona, Ibáñez is the creator of several comic book series, the most famous of which is Mortadelo y Filemón. He worked in a bank while publishing his first drawings before dedicating himself fully to his craft in 1957. A year later, Mortadelo y Filemón appeared for the first time in the publication '' Pulgarcito''. Subsequently, Ibáñez created several other characters. Since 1988, he has drawn six new Mortadelo y Filemón albums a year, many of which incorporate issues of the day. In 1994, he received the Grand Prize of the ''Salón del Cómic de Barcelona'' and in 2001 he was awarded with the ''Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes'' ("Gold Medal for Contributions to the Fine Arts").
