Psychonauts (band)
Psychonauts, also known as The Psychonauts, are a British music duo. They consist of Pablo Clement and Paul Mogg. The two met in Somerset, UK, while "digging through crates at the local record store". Clement is also a member of James Lavelle's Unkle project. Career In 1998, Psychonauts released a mix album, ''Time Machine'', on Mo' Wax. In 2015, ''Fact'' placed it at number 35 on the "50 Best Trip-Hop Albums of All Time" list. In 2003, the duo released their first studio album, ''Songs for Creatures'', on International DeeJay Gigolo Records. John Bush of AllMusic gave the album 4 out of 5 stars, calling it "one of the best records to appear from a former Mo' Wax act in several years." Neesh Asghar of ''The Guardian'' described it as "a gorgeous record showcasing cinematic soundscapes and seductive ethereal ambience alongside pastoral folk-pop songs and electro disco." Trip Hop
Trip hop is a musical genre that has been described as a psychedelic music, psychedelic fusion of hip hop music, hip hop and electronica with slow tempos and an atmospheric sound. The style emerged as a more experimental music, experimental variant of breakbeat from the Bristol underground scene, Bristol sound scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s, incorporating influences from jazz, soul music, soul, funk, dub reggae, rap music, rap, as well as sampling (music), sampling from movie soundtracks and other eclectic sources. Pioneering trip hop acts include Massive Attack, Unkle, UNKLE, Tricky (musician), Tricky, and Portishead (band), Portishead. Mo' Wax
Mo' Wax was a British record label founded by James Lavelle in 1992. The label was not co-founded by Tim Goldsworthy, as is often reported. Steve Finan became co-owner shortly after. Mo' Wax came to recognition for being at the forefront of trip hop, turntablism and alternative hip hop during the mid-1990s. The label also released notable records covering techno, drum and bass and Electro (music), electro. Mo' Wax also helped the graffiti artist Futura 2000 regain popularity, by using his artwork on many of their releases in the 1990s. Lavelle signed partial ownership of Mo' Wax over to A&M Records (now part of the Universal Music Group) in 1996. When their deal expired he signed with Beggars Group, who still own some of the catalogue. International DeeJay Gigolo Records
International DeeJay Gigolo Records is a German electronic music record label run by techno artist DJ Hell (real name Helmut Geier). The label was founded in Munich in 1996 by DJ Hell and DJ Upstart as an affiliate of label Disko B. It is Germany's most successful electronic music record label, specialising in electro, house and techno with 80's pop and disco influences. "Gigolo" has released records by Dave Clarke, Jeff Mills, DJ Hell, Miss Kittin, The Hacker, The Penelopes, The Advent, Dopplereffekt, Fischerspooner, Tiga, Princess Superstar and Vitalic. In particular, the label is widely credited as being the germ cell of the electroclash music genre in the late 1990s. Gigolo's most successful release came in 2001, with Vitalic's ''Poney EP'' (which included techno favourite "La Rock 01" on the B-side). This EP was remastered and re-issued in 2006. James Lavelle
James Lavelle (born 22 February 1974) is an English electronic musician, record label owner and curator. He founded the Mo'Wax record label in 1992, and has been the only constant member of UNKLE. He directed the 2014 edition of the Meltdown festival on London's South Bank, and curated the 2016 exhibition "Daydreaming with Stanley Kubrick" at Somerset House. He is the subject of 2016 documentary film '' The Man from Mo'Wax''. Career Lavelle founded Mo' Wax in 1992. The label was not co-founded by Tim Goldsworthy, as is often reported. Unkle
Unkle (often stylised as U.N.K.L.E. or UNKLE, occasionally known as UNKLE Sounds) is a British musical outfit founded in 1992 by James Lavelle. Originally categorised as trip hop, the group once included producer DJ Shadow and have employed a variety of guest artists and producers. History First incarnation (1992–1996) The first release credited to the 'Men from U.N.K.L.E' was a remix for United Future Organization, included on their 1992 ''Loud Minority'' single. Lavelle and Goldsworthy were joined by Masayuki Kudo and Toshio Nakanishi of the Japanese hip hop crew Major Force (later Major Force West).
