Protectionist (horse)
Protectionist (21 March 2010 – 14 November 2023) was a Thoroughbred racehorse bred and trained in Germany. He was bred by Christoph Berglar, and owned by Berglar in conjunction with an Australian syndicate. Protectionist was the winner of the 2014 Melbourne Cup, ridden by Ryan Moore (jockey), Ryan Moore and trained by , and became the first German-trained horse to win the race. Background Protectionist was sired by Monsun, who also sired the 2013 Melbourne Cup winner, Fiorente. The horse was part-owned by his breeder, Christoph Berglar, and also by Australian Bloodstock, a syndicate based in Newcastle, New South Wales. Protectionist was the second foal out of the Peintre Celebre mare Patineuse. Protectionist died in November 2023, at the age of 13. 2014 Melbourne Cup
The 2014 Emirates Melbourne Cup was the 154th running of the Melbourne Cup, Australia's most prestigious Thoroughbred horse race. The race, run over 3,200 metres, was held on 4 November 2014, at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne. Media Puzzle (May 7, 1997 – June 22, 2006), foaled in the United States was an Irish horse best known for his win in the 2002 Melbourne Cup. Background Media Puzzle was bred by Walter Haefner's Moyglare Stud Farm and owned by Dr. M. W. Smurfit. He was sired by Theatrical, the 1987 U.S. Champion Male Turf Horse, and out of the mare Market Slide by Gulch, the 1988 U.S. Champion Sprint Horse. Media Puzzle is the half brother of Refuse to Bend, a four-time group 1 winning entire by Sadler's Wells. Racing career At age three, Media Puzzle's best showings were third-place finishes in the Gallinule and St. Leger Stakes. Adelaide foaled 19 February 2011 is an Irish thoroughbred racehorse. A winner of both races (including the Gallinule Stakes) in his native country he is better known for his performances in international competition. In 2014 he raced in the United Kingdom, France, the United States and Australia, recording major wins in the Secretariat Stakes and the Cox Plate. Background Adelaide is a bay horse with a white star and three white socks bred in Ireland by the Elletelle Syndicate. The Caulfield Cup is a Melbourne Racing Club Group races, Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race held under Handicap (horse racing), handicap conditions. This is for all horses aged three years old and older. It takes place over a distance of 2400 metres at the Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia in mid October. The prize money is A$5,000,000. Admire Rakti (20 February 2008 – 4 November 2014) was a Japanese Thoroughbred racehorse who won the Diamond Stakes in Japan and the Caulfield Cup in Australia. He died in his stall after competing in the 154th Melbourne Cup on 4 November 2014. Background Admire Rakti was a bay horse with a white star, bred in Japan by Northern Farm. He was from the first crop of foals sired by Heart's Cry, a horse whose wins included the Arima Kinen and the Dubai Sheema Classic. Craig Williams (jockey)
Craig Williams (born 23 May 1977) is a jockey based in Victoria, Australia. He has won multiple group one races in Australia and worldwide, including the 2019 Melbourne Cup. Williams rode his first race in 1993. In 2011, he almost achieved a unique Australian horse racing triple, in winning the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup. After winning the first two on Southern Speed and Pinker Pinker respectively, Williams was suspended for careless riding during the 2011 Bendigo Cup. The horse he was scheduled to ride in the Melbourne Cup, Dunaden, went on to win with last-minute replacement jockey Christophe Lemaire on board.
