Prosser, Washington
Prosser () is a city in and the county seat of Benton County, Washington, United States. Situated along the Yakima River, it had a population of 5,714 at the 2010 census. History Prosser was long home to Native Americans who lived and fished along the river. They called the area "Táptat" (alternatively spelled Tap-tat, Top tut, etc.), which translates to "long hair in front, short hair on the sides", referring to a style of headdress. Colonel William Farrand Prosser first surveyed the area in 1879, then claimed homestead in 1882. The Northern Pacific Railroad laid tracks through the area two years later. A town plat was filed by Colonel Prosser in 1885, and in 1886 he was elected Yakima County Auditor. He moved to North Yakima to attend to these duties, and never returned to the town that he founded. Prosser Gifford was a historian, author, and academic administrator. He held various positions at notable academic institutions including the position of first Dean of Faculty at Amherst College. He is probably best known for his work as Director of Scholarly Programs at the Library of Congress. He contributed numerous works to the fields of African History and U.S. Foreign Policy. Education Prosser attended Buckley School (New York City) and Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, CT. Prosser High School
Prosser High School is a school in Prosser, Washington. It is the main high school in the Prosser School District, though there is also an alternative Prosser Falls Education Center. The school has around 920 students attending in grades 9 through 12. The mascot is the Mustang and the school colors are red and white. Proposed new campus The school district has been trying to build a new, larger high school to replace the existing campus, which was built in 1936. The current campus is overcrowded and run-down, with about 900 students attending a facility built for 500 students. District officials have held bond elections three times so far, once in 2005 and again in February and April 2011, in an attempt to get voter approval of a new school. The electoral division of Prosser is one of the fifteen electorates in the Tasmanian Legislative Council, it includes the south-east coast of Tasmania, the Sorell township and the Tasman Peninsula. Prosser is named after the Prosser River, which flows through the centre of the division. Their current MLC is Jane Howlett, a member of the Liberal Party, who was first elected in 2018.
