Progress Party (Jersey)
The Progress Party was a centrist, big tent party in Jersey, formed in 2021 to compete for the 2022 Jersey general election. Senator Steve Pallett lead the party, which included Deputy Steve Luce and former Deputy Eddie Noel. Its policies included a points-based immigration system, the construction of a new hospital in Jersey, and a review of publicly-owned property on the island for the purpose of building or repurposing existing buildings on said property for affordable housing. In April 2022, the Progress Party entered into a political pact with the Jersey Liberal Conservatives Party. Philip Bailhache
Sir Philip Martin Bailhache KC ( ) is a Jersey politician and lawyer. He served between 1975 and 2009 in the four Crown Offices, as HM Solicitor General, HM Attorney General, Deputy Bailiff, and Bailiff of Jersey. In his political career, he was Deputy for Grouville 1972-75. After retiring as Bailiff, he was elected as a Senator in the States Assembly in the 2011 general election. He served as Jersey’s first Minister for External Relations from 2013 to 2018. He stood again in the 2022 general election and was elected Deputy for St Clement. He is leader of the Jersey Liberal Conservatives party. Early life Bailhache was born in Jersey on 28 February 1946. Although the politics of Jersey has been largely based on independent parliamentary representatives, from time to time the island has had political parties. There are currently 3 active political parties in the island. In 2000, the Clothier report noted that "over the centuries Jersey has had many parties, by which one means only a coming together of like minds to achieve a particular objective. Once achieved, the binding purpose has disappeared and the group pursuing it has dissolved. Such a grouping is not a true political party because it lacks the cement of a common philosophy of government, having only a narrow objective to hold it together until the objective is either attained or lost". Better Way 2022
Better Way 2022, also known as A Better Way, is a group of independent politicians in Jersey. It does not enforce a party whip, but its members subscribe to a list of common principles and pledge to work collaboratively together. Better Way was founded in March 2022 to contest the 2022 general election. It stood five candidates for Deputy, of which four were elected. A points-based immigration system or merit-based immigration system is an immigration system where a noncitizen's eligibility to immigrate is (partly or wholly) determined by whether that noncitizen is able to score above a threshold number of points in a scoring system that might include such factors as education level, wealth, connection with the country, language fluency, existing job offer, or others.
