Progress (Faroe Islands)
Progress () is a Liberalism, liberal, pro-Faroese independence List of political parties on the Faroe Islands, political party on the Faroe Islands. History Founded on 9 March 2011 by Poul Michelsen and others as a breakaway from the People's Party (Faroe Islands), People's Party, the party won two seats in the 2011 Faroese parliamentary election, October 2011 election to the 33-seat Løgting. Its two MPs in this first election were Poul Michelsen and Janus Rein. However, almost a year after the election, on 6 October 2012, Rein left the party and became an independent member of the Faroese Parliament. He didn't give any clear reason to why he left the party, just that there were some disagreements between him and Poul Michelsen. Poul Michelsen
Poul Johan Sundberg Michelsen (born 22 July 1944 in Tórshavn) is a Faroe Islands, Faroese business man and former politician. He was the leader of Progress (Faroe Islands), Progress (Framsókn), which he and others established in 2011. Before the establishment of Progress, he was a member of People's Party (Faroe Islands), People's Party (Fólkaflokkurin). In March 2020 he chose to leave the Parliament and ending his political career after struggling with sequelae of a stroke for some months. Background Michelsen grew up in Tórshavn and was active in sports. He was apprenticed as a commercial trainee at the Balslev company, which today is called Bygma-Balslev. Later, Kartni Winther and Torbjørn Sørensen bought the wholesale from Balslev and named it Kartni Winther. It was run by Kartni Winther, Torbjørn Sørensen and Poul Michelsen until Michelsen started his own wholesale business in 1974. Social Democratic Party (Faroe Islands)
The Social Democratic Party (, , JF) (, JF) is a social democratic political party on the Faroe Islands, led by Aksel V. Johannesen. History The Social Democratic Party was founded on 25 September 1925 by members of Faroese trade unions. Its youth organization '' Sosialistiskt Ungmannafelag'' (Socialist Youth) was founded in 1965. At the 2004 general election on 20 January 2004, the party received 21.8% of the popular vote and therefore won 7 out of 33 seats in the Løgting. At the 2008 general election on 19 January 2008, the party received 19.3% of the popular vote and therefore won 6 out of 33 seats. In the 2011 election for the Danish Folketing, the party improved its vote share to 21.0%, and took one of the two Faroese seats previously held by Republic. Political Parties In The Faroe Islands
The Faroe Islands have a multi-party system, with numerous parties in which no one party often has a chance of gaining power alone, and parties must work with each other to form coalition governments. There are two major ideological cleavages in Faroese politics. In addition to the left-right spectrum, parties are also divided between those that want to maintain the Faroes' place within the Danish Realm ('unionists') and those that want Faroese independence ('separatists'). The current government is formed by a coalition between the centre-left Social Democratic Party, the left-wing Republic, and the centre-right Progress. 2019 Faroese General Election
General elections were held in the Faroe Islands on 31 August 2019. The elections resulted in the defeat of Aksel V. Johannesen's coalition government consisting of the Social Democrats, Republic, and Progress. Following the elections, a new coalition government was formed by Union Party leader Bárður á Steig Nielsen, consisting of the Union Party, the People's Party and the Centre Party, which won 17 of the 33 seats. According to political scientist Lise Lyck, the main election issues were public finances (welfare, taxes and public coffers), recent reforms of the fishing sector and same-sex marriage. 2011 Faroese General Election
Early general elections were held in the Faroe Islands on 29 October 2011. Faroese law states that new elections must be held at least once every four years; however, either the Prime Minister (''Løgmaður'') or a majority of the members of the Faroese Parliament (the ''Løgting'') may call an election before the end of this period. The previous elections having been held on 20 January 2008, the latest date on which the next elections could have been held was 19 January 2012. However, the Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands, Kaj Leo Johannesen, announced on 27 September 2011 that elections would be held on 29 October 2011. He gave no particular reason for his decision. Parliamentary elections must be held no earlier than four weeks and no later than five weeks after the announcement has been made. Hanna Jensen
Hanna Jensen (born 19 February 1973 in Leirvík) is a Faroese high school teacher and a liberal - conservative politician (Progress). Biography After finishing high school, Hanna Jensen studied Faroese language and literature at the University of the Faroe Islands. She also took French language and literature at the University of Copenhagen, along with Jurisprudence and Pedagogy. Eventually, she finished with a Cand.mag. degree. Jensen has been teaching and working as a school counsellor at the high school (gymnasium) in Kambsdalur, Fuglafjørður since 2005. Before that, she was teaching at The Technical college in Klaksvík. She has also been teaching Faroese literature at the Faroese Teachers School (''Føroya Læraraskúli'') in Tórshavn . Currently, she lives in Norðragøta.
