Hanna Jensen
Hanna Jensen (born 19 February 1973 in Leirvík) is a Faroese high school teacher and a liberal politician (Progress). Biography After finishing high school she studied Faroese language and literature at the University of the Faroe Islands and French language and literature at the University of Copenhagen as well as Jurisprudence and Pedagogy and finished with a Cand.mag. degree. Jensen has been teaching and working as a school counsellor at the high school (gymnasium) in Kambsdalur, Fuglafjørður since 2005. Before that she was teaching at The Technical college in Klaksvík. She has also been teaching in Faroese literature at the Faroese Teachers School (''Føroya Læraraskúli'') in Tórshavn . She lives in Norðragøta. Jensen has been the French Consul General of the Faroe Islands since 2010. Løgting
The Løgting (pronounced ; da, Lagtinget) is the unicameral parliament of the Faroe Islands, an autonomous territory within the Danish Realm. The name literally means "''Law Thing''"—that is, a law assembly—and derives from Old Norse ''lǫgþing'', which was a name given to ancient assemblies. A ''ting'' or ''þing'' has existed on the Faroe Islands for over a millennium and the Løgting was the highest authority on the islands in the Viking era. From 1274 to 1816 it functioned primarily as a judicial body, whereas the modern Løgting established in 1852 is a parliamentary assembly, which gained legislative power when home rule was introduced in 1948. The Manx Tynwald and the Icelandic Alþing are the two other modern parliaments with ties back to the old Norse assemblies of Europe. People's Party (Faroe Islands)
The Faroese People's Party – Radical Self-Government ( fo, Hin føroyski fólkaflokkurin – radikalt sjálvstýri) is a pro-Faroese independence conservative and conservative-liberal political party on the Faroe Islands led by Beinir Johannesen. One of the four major parties, it has had eight seats in the Løgting since the 2019 election, making it the joint-largest party, but it has neither of the Faroes' seats in the Folketing. Founded in 1939 as a split from the Self-Government Party and by former members of the Business Party (Vinnuflokkurin), the party has traditionally supported greater autonomy for the Faroe Islands. Party leader Hákun Djurhuus served as Prime Minister from 1963 to 1967, as did Jógvan Sundstein from 1989 to 1991. Bjørt Samuelsen (2 March 1965 in Tórshavn) is a Faroese journalist, master in food science (Danish: ) and politician ( Republic). Political career She was elected for the Løgting at the 2008 Faroese general election and again in 2011. She was not elected at the 2015 elections, but kept her seat in the parliament because Høgni Hoydal was appointed minister of fisheries. Samuelsen was Ministers of Trade and Industry from 4 February until 15 September 2008. She was the first female minister of trade and industry of the Faroe Islands and as of 2019 the only one. Bjørt Samuelsen was named Speaker of the Løgting in December 2022. Republic ( fo, Tjóðveldi), formerly known as the Republican Party ( fo, Tjóðveldisflokkurin) is a left-wing political party on the Faroe Islands committed to Faroese independence. History The party was founded in 1948 as a reaction to the islands failing to gain independence despite the outcome of the 1946 independence referendum, after which independence was subsequently declared but annulled by the Danish King. In 1998, Høgni Hoydal succeeded Heini O. Heinesen as party leader. During the 20 January 2004 legislative elections, the party won 21.7% of the popular vote and 8 out of 33 seats. However, after the passing of an amendment adding the term "sexual orientation" to paragraph 266b of the Anti-Discrimination Act, MP Karsten Hansen announced that he was leaving the party owing to a difference in opinion. The Social Democratic Party ( fo, Javnaðarflokkurin, lit=Equality Party, JF) is a social-democratic political party on the Faroe Islands, led by Aksel V. Johannesen. History The Social Democratic Party was founded on 25 September 1925 by members of Faroese trade unions. Its youth organization '' Sosialistiskt Ungmannafelag'' (Socialist Youth) was founded in 1965. At the 2004 general election on 20 January 2004, the party received 21.8% of the popular vote and therefore won 7 out of 33 seats in the Løgting. At the 2008 general election on 19 January 2008, the party received 19.3% of the popular vote and therefore won 6 out of 33 seats. Sonja Jógvansdóttir
Sonja J. Jógvansdóttir (born 9 November 1977 in Tórshavn) is a Faroese journalist, politician, and establisher and coordinator of Samtak, the Faroese trade union center. Until 2015, she was a member of Social Democratic Party (Javnaðarflokkurin). She is a spokesperson for the rights of homosexual people and their rights in the Faroe Islands and was one of the establishers of LGBT Faroe Islands in 2011. Political career On 1 September 2015, Jógvansdóttir became the first Faroese person, who lives openly as a homosexual, who was elected to the Faroese parliament. 2015 Faroese General Election
General elections were held in the Faroe Islands on 1 September 2015. Elections for the Danish Folketing were held beforehand on 18 June. Background On 4 August 2015 the Løgting passed a motion that criticized Prime Minister Kaj Leo Johannesen and former Minister of the Interior Kári P. Højgaard, accusing Johannesen of lying to the Løgting in connection with a 1 million kroner break fee clause in the contract led by the Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners to build a sub-sea tunnel between Eysturoy and Streymoy. Although Kaj Leo Johannesen had previously told the Løgting that he had no part of the break fee, a judicial inquiry led by Hans Gammeltoft-Hansen (the Danish ombudsman from 1987 until 2012) confirmed in June 2015 that Kaj Leo Johannesen had knowingly misled the Løgting on several occasions, thereby breaking the law.
