Stephen W. Porges (* 1945) is an American psychologist and neuroscientist. He is the Professor of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Porges is also currently Director of the Kinsey Institute Traumatic Stress Research Consortium at Indiana University Bloomington, which studies trauma. He was previously a professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago, where he was director of the Brain-Body Center at the College of Medicine, and at the University of Maryland. He proposed the unproven polyvagal theory in 1994. He is today a neuroscientist with particular interests in cranial nerve responses as it relates to both animals and man in which there are specified responses that are physiological in the body. Arthur Porges (; 20 August 1915 – 12 May 2006) was an American writer of numerous short stories, most notably during the 1950s and 1960s, though he continued to write and publish stories until his death. Life Arthur Porges was born in Chicago, Illinois, on 20 August 1915. After completing his B.A. and master's degrees in mathematics, he was drafted into the army for World War II and served as an instructor in California. After the war, he taught mathematics at college before retiring to write. Heinrich Porges (November 25, 1837 – November 17, 1900) was a Czech- Austrian choirmaster, music critic and writer of Jewish descent. Life Heinrich Porges was born in Prague, the son of Simon Porges (1801–1869) and his wife Charlotte. He originally studied Philosophy and Law in Prague, later turning to music. In 1863 he became an assistant of the critic Franz Brendel in editing the ''Neue Zeitschrift für Musik'' in Leipzig. In 1867 he produced the arts pages of the ''Süddeutsche Presse'' in Muncih. He remained there as music critic of the ''Münchner Neueste Nachrichten'' from 1880. Porges became a devotee and intimate of Richard Wagner despite Wagner's antisemitism, and his extensive notes on Wagner's rehearsal and staging were published in the journal ''Bayreuther Blätter'' over the period 1880-1896. Moses Porges, Edler von Portheim, or Moses Porges von Portheim (13/22 December 1781, Prague – 21 May 1870, Prague) was a Bohemian- Austrian industrialist (manufacturer) and vice-burgomaster of Prague- Smichow; knight of the Order of Franz Joseph. He was one of the earliest and most prominent of the large manufacturers of Austria, and was very closely associated with his younger brother, Leopold (Löw) Judah. Nenad Porges (born 27 December 1946 in Zagreb, Croatia) is a Croatian politician, businessman, entrepreneur and former Minister of Economy, Labour and Entrepreneurship. Background and education Porges was born in Zagreb to a Jewish family who came to Zagreb from Vienna and Bratislava. Nathan Porges (21 December 1848 – 27 August 1924) was a Bohemia and German rabbi. Biography Porges was born in Prostějov in Moravia, then part of the Austrian Empire. He was educated in his native town Prostějov, at the gymnasium of Olomouc, and at the University of Olomouc (Ph.D. 1869) and the Jewish Theological Seminary (rabbi 1869) of Breslau (Wrocław). He became successively rabbi at Nakel (Nakło nad Notecią) (1875), Mannheim (1879), Pilsen (1880), Karlovy Vary (1882), and Leipzig; he began officiating in the last city in 1888. Porges died in Würzburg. Elsa Bernstein (née Porges; pseudonym, Ernst Rosmer; 27 October 1866 – 2 July 1949) was an Austrian-German writer, dramatist, and literary figure. Life Elsa Porges was born in Vienna, a daughter of Heinrich Porges (a close friend of Richard Wagner). At the age of ten, at her own insistence, she attended the first complete, four-opera performance of '' The Ring Cycle'' in Bayreuth in 1876, for which her father served as Wagner's special documentary-archivist. Jules Porgès (25 May 1839 – 20 September 1921) was a Paris-based financier who played a central role in the rise of the Randlords who controlled the diamond and gold mining industries in South Africa. He was born Yehuda Porges in Vienna and raised in Prague, where his father was a jeweller. He settled in Paris in the early 1860s and established himself as a diamond trader, through his company Jules Porgès & Cie. He recognized early the significance of the diamond finds in South Africa and, in 1873, sent two of his younger staff, Alfred Beit and Julius Wernher, to South Africa as his firm's representatives.
