Pop (train)
The ETR 103 and ETR 104 are electric multiple units built by Alstom in Savigliano, belonging to the Coradia Stream family, intended for the regional railway services of various Italian companies. It is used by many Italian railway companies; Trenitalia has most of this type of train in its fleet, other operators also use the trains such as Trenord, Tper, and Ferrotramviaria. All operators except Trenitalia use the Pop commercial name. Trenitalia retired the name in November 2024. Trenord still uses the nickname Donizetti for their ETR 204 trains. Overview History Alstom and Trenitalia made a framework agreement in August 2016 to manufacture 150 3-car and 4-car trains. Trenitalia Società per azioni, SpA is the primary train operator of Italy. A subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, itself owned by the Italian government. It was established in 2000 following a European Union directive on the deregulation of rail transport. In a comparative study by the European umbrella organization European Federation for Transport and Environment, Transport & Environment (T&E), Trenitalia 2024 achieved the best result of 27 companies. The criteria were reliability, booking, amenities on board and taking bikes on medium and long-distance connections. The ALe 724 are a class of EMUs of the Italian Ferrovie dello Stato, projected for suburban and regional services. History In 1978 the Ferrovie dello Stato received a series of prototype-EMUs, the so-called " Treni GAI", that had for the first time a chopper technology instead of the classical electric equipment. As the tests of the "treni GAI" were positive, in May 1979 the FS ordered a series of EMUs derived from them. The lombard regional railway company FNM had already ordered in 1978 some similar railcars, numbered E.750.
