Polkacide
Polkacide was a band based in the San Francisco Bay Area that played "punk polka". Band history Polkacide was founded in 1985 by Ward Abronski, originally organized to play a one-time show for the 50th anniversary of the Deaf Club in San Francisco. None of the 12 original members were polka musicians at the time, but they had varied backgrounds in classical, rock, punk and jazz music. Clarinetist Neil Kaitner came up with the name for the band and also designed the band logo, which features a skull and crossed sausages. One week before the performance was to take place, it was cancelled due to noise abatement orders from local authorities. Those Darn Accordions
Those Darn Accordions, commonly abbreviated as TDA, are an American accordion band from San Francisco, California, originally formed in 1989 by Linda "Big Lou" Seekins. Boasting several accordionists whose numbers have fluctuated over the years and rounded out by a bassist and a drummer, Those Darn Accordions play a multi-genre mix of rock, pop and polka originals, characterized by the unusual use of effects and distortion on their accordions and the humorous lyrics of current frontman Paul Rogers. The band also performs from an extensive repertoire of covers, ranging from traditional accordion standards and polkas to hard rock, funk and new wave songs. Since their formation, TDA have released six studio albums and one EP, with their most recent album ''Squeeze Machine'' having been released in 2007. The Deaf Club
The Deaf Club was a notable music venue located on Valencia Street in San Francisco which remained open for an 18-month period. Its main attraction was punk music. The name comes from the fact the building it was in originally began as a deaf people's clubhouse in the 1930s. Founding Daphne Hanrahan, manager of The Offs, discovered the San Francisco Club for the Deaf, and was able to rent it on a nightly basis. She remembers finding the place: “I bought a burrito at La Cumbre and noticed a sign on the fire escape across the street. It said ‘Hall for Rent.’ I went up the flights of stairs and saw two guys watching TV with the sound off. After a very short while, I realized we weren't going to communicate, so I wrote on a piece of paper that I wanted to rent the place. Mabuhay Gardens
The Mabuhay Gardens, also known as The Fab Mab or The Mab, was a former San Francisco nightclub, located at 443 Broadway Street, in North Beach on the Broadway strip area best known for its striptease clubs. It closed in 1987. History The Mabuhay Gardens was located in the lower level of the 435 Broadway Street building, which also housed the ''On Broadway Theater'', known in 1984–1985 as "Rock on Broadway." Originally a Filipino restaurant and music club owned by Ness Aquino. It featured many Filipino celebrities, including Eddie Mesa and Amapola (also known as Amapola Cabase). Aquino and Amapola also co-hosted a weekly television program, ''The Amapola Presents Show'' on KEMO TV Channel 20. Doctor Demento
Barret Eugene Hansen (born April 2, 1941), known professionally as Dr. Demento, is an American radio broadcaster and record collector specializing in novelty songs, comedy, and strange or unusual recordings dating from the early days of phonograph records to the present. Hansen created the Demento persona in 1970 while working at Pasadena, California, station KPPC-FM. He played "Transfusion" by Nervous Norvus on the radio, and DJ "The Obscene" Steven Clean said that Hansen had to be "demented" to play it, and the name stuck. His weekly show went into syndication in 1974 and was syndicated by the Westwood One Radio Network from 1978 to 1992. Broadcast syndication of the show ended on June 6, 2010, but the show continues to be produced weekly in an online version.
