Band history
Polkacide is an American band formed in 1985 in San Francisco, California. The band was originally organized to perform at a one-time event celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Deaf Club. None of the twelve original members were professional polka musicians; instead, they brought diverse musical backgrounds, including classical, rock, punk, and jazz. Clarinetist Neil Kaitner coined the band's name and designed its logo, which features a skull and crossed sausages. The band's initial performance was canceled due to noise abatement orders from local authorities just one week before the scheduled date. Rather than forgo their debut, the members decided to perform at the Mabuhay Gardens, a well-known punk venue in San Francisco. Polkacide is recognized for its distinctive fusion of traditional polka music and punk rock, resulting in a lively and energetic sound. Their performances often include humorous and irreverent lyrics, which have contributed to their status as a staple of the San Francisco Bay Area music scene.
