Political World
"Political World" is an uptempo folk rock song written and recorded by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released as the opening track on his 1989 album '' Oh Mercy'' and as a single in Europe in 1990. It was produced by Daniel Lanois. Composition and recording Dylan describes writing the lyrics of "Political World" in his Malibu home in the "Oh Mercy" chapter of his memoir '' Chronicles: Volume One'': "One night when everyone was asleep and I was sitting at the kitchen table, nothing on the hillside but a shiny bed of lights - all that changed. I wrote about twenty verses for a song called 'Political World' and this was about the first of twenty songs I would write in the next month or so...With the song I thought I might have broken through to something. Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan (legally Robert Dylan, born Robert Allen Zimmerman, May 24, 1941) is an American singer-songwriter. Often regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of all time, Dylan has been a major figure in popular culture during a career spanning more than 60 years. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s, when songs such as " Blowin' in the Wind" (1963) and " The Times They Are a-Changin' (1964) became anthems for the civil rights and antiwar movements. His lyrics during this period incorporated a range of political, social, philosophical, and literary influences, defying pop music conventions and appealing to the burgeoning counterculture. "With God on Our Side" is a song by Bob Dylan, released as the third track on his 1964 album '' The Times They Are A-Changin'''. Dylan first performed the song during his debut at The Town Hall in New York City on April 12, 1963. Lyrics The lyrics address the tendency of Americans to believe that God will invariably side with them and oppose those with whom they disagree, thus leaving unquestioned the morality of wars fought and atrocities committed by their country. Dylan mentions several historical events, including the slaughter of Native Americans in the nineteenth century, the Spanish–American War, the American Civil War, World Wars I and II, The Holocaust, the Cold War and the betrayal of Jesus Christ by Judas Iscariot. Francesco De Gregori OMRI (born 4 April 1951) is an Italian singer-songwriter. In Italy, he is popularly known as "Il Principe dei cantautori" ("The Prince of the singer-songwriters"), a nickname referring to the elegance of his lyrics. The Carolina Chocolate Drops were an old-time string band from Durham, North Carolina. Their 2010 album, '' Genuine Negro Jig,'' won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards, and was number 9 in ''fRoots'' magazine's top 10 albums of 2010. Toad's Place
Toad's Place is a concert venue and nightclub located in New Haven, Connecticut. History The building, located on York Street down the street from Ashley's Ice Cream and across an alley from Mory's Temple Bar, was the original location of the Yale Co-op. During the 1960s, it was a popular restaurant called Hungry Charlie's and then the location of Caleb's Tavern. In 1974, Michael Spoerndle, formerly a student at the Culinary Institute of America, rented the building for a French and Italian restaurant, which opened in March 1975. He named it Toad's Place, after a childhood joke. Never Ending Tour
The Never Ending Tour is the popular name for Bob Dylan's ongoing touring schedule which began on June 7, 1988. During the course of the tour, musicians have come and gone as the band has continued to evolve. The tour amassed a huge fan base with some fans traveling from around the world to attend as many Dylan shows as possible. Dylan himself has been dismissive of the Never Ending Tour tag. In the sleeve notes to his album ''World Gone Wrong'' (1993), Dylan wrote: His subsequent touring schedule has continued to be referred to as the "Never Ending Tour" by most media outlets.
