Philipp Franz Von Siebold
Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold (17 February 1796 – 18 October 1866) was a German physician, botanist and traveller. He achieved prominence by his studies of Japanese flora (plants), flora and fauna (animals), fauna and the introduction of Western medicine in Japan. He was the father of the first female Japanese doctor educated in Western medicine, Kusumoto Ine. Career Early life Born into a family of doctors and professors of medicine in Würzburg (then in the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg, later part of Bavaria), von Siebold initially studied medicine at the University of Würzburg from November 1815, where he became a member of the German Student Corps, Corps Moenania Würzburg. One of his professors was Franz Xaver Heller (1775–1840), author of the ' ("Flora of the Grand Duchy of Würzburg", 1810–1811). Ignaz Döllinger (1770–1841), his professor of anatomy and physiology, however, most influenced him. Döllinger was one of the first professors to under ... Pleistocene
The Pleistocene ( ; referred to colloquially as the ''ice age, Ice Age'') is the geological epoch (geology), epoch that lasted from to 11,700 years ago, spanning the Earth's most recent period of repeated glaciations. Before a change was finally confirmed in 2009 by the International Union of Geological Sciences, the cutoff of the Pleistocene and the preceding Pliocene was regarded as being 1.806 million years Before Present (BP). Publications from earlier years may use either definition of the period. The end of the Pleistocene corresponds with the end of the last glacial period and also with the end of the Paleolithic age used in archaeology. The name is a combination of Ancient Greek () 'most' and (; Latinized as ) 'new'. The aridification and cooling trends of the preceding Neogene were continued in the Pleistocene. The climate was strongly variable depending on the glacial cycle, oscillating between cold Glacial period, glacial periods and warmer Interglacial, int ... Fagales Genera
The Fagales are an order (biology), order of flowering plants in the rosid group of dicotyledons, including some of the best-known trees. Well-known members of Fagales include: beeches, chestnuts, oaks, Juglans, walnut, pecan, hickory, birches, alders, hazels, hornbeams, Casuarinaceae, she-oaks, and Nothofagus, southern beeches. The order name is derived from genus ''Fagus'' (beeches). Systematics Fagales include the following seven families, according to the APG III system of Taxonomy, classification: *Betulaceae – birch family (''Alnus'', ''Betula'', ''Carpinus'', ''Corylus'', ''Ostrya'', and ''Ostryopsis'') *Casuarinaceae – she-oak family (''Allocasuarina'', ''Casuarina'', ''Ceuthostoma'', and ''Gymnostoma'') *Fagaceae – beech family (''Castanea (genus), Castanea'', ''Castanopsis'', ''Chrysolepis'', ''Beech, Fagus'', ''Lithocarpus'', ''Notholithocarpus'', ''Quercus'', and ''Trigonobalanus'') *Juglandaceae – walnut family (''Alfaroa'', ''Carya'', ''Cyclocarya'', ''Engel ... Juglandoideae
Juglandoideae is a subfamily of the walnut family Juglandaceae. This clade was first described by Gen-ichi Koidzumi, Koidzumi in 1937 by the name "Drupoideae," based on the drupe-like fruits of ''Juglans'' and ''Carya''. This name was rejected because it was not based on the name of the type genus. Jean-François Leroy (botanist), Leroy (1955) and Hans Melchior, Melchior (1964) both published descriptions of the clade using the name "Jugandoideae," but both were deemed invalid due to technicalities. The first valid publication of the name was by Wayne Eyer Manning, Manning (1978). * Subfamily Juglandoideae ** Tribe Caryeae *** ''hickory, Carya'' – hickory and pecan *** ''Annamocarya'' *** ''Platycarya'' ** Tribe Juglandeae *** ''Cyclocarya'' – wheel wingnut *** ''Juglans'' – walnut *** ''Pterocarya'' – wingnut Manos and Stone (2001) proposed the following reorganization to reflect a more probable Phylogenetics, phylogenetic relationship that shows that ''Platycar ... American Journal Of Botany
The ''American Journal of Botany'' is a monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal which covers all aspects of plant biology. It has been published by the Botanical Society of America since 1914. The journal has an impact factor of 3.038, as of 2019. access is available through the publisher John Wiley & Sons ( Wiley). From 1951 to 1953, Oswald Tippo served as its editor; the current editor is Pamela Diggle. History In the early 20th century, the field of botany was rapidly expanding, but the publications in which botanists could publish remained limited and heavily backlogged. By 1905, it was estimated that 250,000 contributions were generated in 8 or 9 languages. At the 1911 annual meeting of the society in Washington D.C., it was noted that at least 300 pages of American botanical contributions were sent abroad for publication, with a backlog resulting in a one-year delay in publication. On 31 December 1907, the Botanical Society of America met in Chicago and formally recom ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
