Plasmoid
A plasmoid is a coherent structure of Plasma (physics), plasma and magnetic fields. Plasmoids have been proposed to explain natural phenomena such as ball lightning, magnetic bubbles in the magnetosphere, and objects in cometary tails, in the solar wind, solar atmosphere, and in the heliospheric current sheet. Plasmoids produced in the laboratory include the compact toroids (similar to a vortex ring in low temperature fluid dynamics or hydrodynamics) field-reversed configurations, spheromaks, and filamentary variants in dense plasma focuses. The word ''plasmoid'' was coined in 1956 by Winston H. A dense plasma focus (DPF) is a type of Plasma (physics), plasma generating system originally developed as a fusion power device, starting in the early 1960s. The system demonstrated Power law, scaling laws that suggested it would not be useful in the commercial power role, and since the 1980s it has been used mainly as a fusion teaching system, and as a source of neutrons and X-rays. A compact toroid (CT) is a type of plasmoid, a class of toroidal plasma configuration that is self-stable, and which does not need magnet coils running through the center of the toroid. They are studied mainly in the field of fusion power, where a lack of complex magnets and a simple geometry may allow building dramatically simpler and less costly fusion reactors. The two best studied compact toroids are the spheromak and field-reversed configuration (FRC). A third configuration, the particle ring, lacks attractive performance to date. Spheromak
A spheromak is an arrangement of plasma formed into a toroidal shape similar to a smoke ring. The spheromak contains large internal electric currents and their associated magnetic fields arranged so the magnetohydrodynamic forces within the spheromak are nearly balanced, resulting in long-lived (microsecond) confinement times without external fields. Spheromaks belong to a type of plasma configuration referred to as the compact toroids. A spheromak can be made and sustained using magnetic flux injection, leading to a dynomak. The physics of the spheromak and of collisions between spheromaks is similar to a variety of astrophysical events, like coronal loops and filaments, relativistic jets and plasmoids. A vortex ring, also called a toroidal vortex, is a torus-shaped vortex in a fluid; that is, a region where the fluid mostly spins around an imaginary axis line that forms a closed loop. The dominant flow in a vortex ring is said to be toroidal, more precisely poloidal.
