Pioche Record
The ''Lincoln County Record'' is a weekly newspaper covering Lincoln County, Nevada. Originally founded as the ''Ely Record'', it is the second oldest weekly newspaper in Nevada. The paper focuses on local stories to provide community journalism for the rural area. History In 1870 or 1871, H.R. Pitchford founded the newspaper in Ely by printing it out of a tent. Since then, the paper used a number of locations as a headquarters, including Pioche, Caliente, and Panaca but is now based in Alamo. In 2011, local reporter Rachel Williford won first place as a Journalist of Merit from the Nevada Press Association. In 2015, the UNLV University Libraries digitized and moved past issues online as part of the National Digital Newspaper Program. The ownership of the ''Record'' has changed multiple times. Community Journalism
Community journalism is locally-oriented, professional news coverage that typically focuses on city neighborhoods, individual suburbs or small towns, rather than metropolitan, state, national or world news. If it covers wider topics, community journalism concentrates on the effect they have on local readers. The history of American newspapers begins in the early 18th century with the publication of the first Thirteen Colonies, colonial newspapers. American newspapers began as modest affairs—a sideline for printers. They became a political force in the campaign for American independence. Following independence the first amendment to U.S. Constitution guaranteed freedom of the press. The Postal Service Act of 1792 provided substantial subsidies: Newspapers were delivered up to 100 miles for a penny and beyond for 1.5 cents, when first class postage ranged from six cents to a quarter. COVID-19 Pandemic In Nevada
The COVID-19 pandemic was confirmed to have reached the U.S. state of Nevada on March 5, 2020. Because of concerns about coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), Nevada governor Steve Sisolak declared a state of emergency on March 12, 2020. Four days later, Nevada reported its first death. On March 17, 2020, Sisolak ordered the closure of non-essential businesses in the state, to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Grocery stores were among the businesses considered essential, and restaurants were allowed to provide drive-thru, takeout, and delivery services. At the end of March 2020, Sisolak announced a 90-day moratorium on evictions and foreclosures for commercial and residential tenants. The Nevada Press Association is the official member trade organization for news publications in the state of Nevada. It is a non-profit organization that represents seven daily and thirty-five weekly news publications in Nevada and the Lake Tahoe region of Northern California, as well as two online news services. Panaca, Nevada
Panaca is an unincorporated town in eastern Lincoln County, Nevada, United States, on State Route 319, about east of U.S. Route 93, near the border with Utah. Its elevation is above sea level. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 963. It is one of only two cities in Nevada that prohibits gambling, the other being Boulder City. History The area that was to become the Panaca settlement was explored by Mormons in 1857. Brigham Young dispatched the explorers in order to locate a potential refuge in case of a U.S. military campaign against Utah.
