Moapa Valley is an unincorporated town in Clark County, Nevada, United States. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 6,924. The valley in which the community lies, also named Moapa Valley, is about long and lies roughly northwest to southeast. Geography The Muddy River, formerly called the Moapa River, originates from the Warm Springs Natural Area and flows through the valley before emptying into Lake Mead. The communities of Moapa Town, Logandale and Overton are located in the valley. Logandale is about southeast of Moapa Town, and Overton is about southeast of Logandale. Prior to the creation of Lake Mead, Moapa Valley also included the town of St. Thomas, which was abandoned in 1938 due to the rising lake level. Moapa Valley is at an elevation of above sea level. A mesa is an isolated, flat-topped elevation, ridge, or hill, bounded from all sides by steep escarpments and standing distinctly above a surrounding plain. Mesas consist of flat-lying soft sedimentary rocks, such as shales, capped by a resistant layer of harder rock, like sandstone or limestone, forming a caprock that protects the flat summit. The caprock may also include dissected lava flows or eroded duricrust. Unlike a ''plateau'', which is a broader, elevated region that may not have horizontal bedrock (e.g., Tibetan Plateau), a mesa is defined by flat-lying strata and steep-sided isolation. The ''Lincoln County Record'' is a weekly newspaper covering Lincoln County, Nevada. Originally founded as the ''Ely Record'', it is the second oldest weekly newspaper in Nevada. The paper focuses on local stories to provide community journalism for the rural area. History In 1870 or 1871, H.R. Pitchford founded the newspaper in Ely by printing it out of a tent. Since then, the paper used a number of locations as a headquarters, including Pioche, Caliente, and Panaca but is now based in Alamo. In 2011, local reporter Rachel Williford won first place as a Journalist of Merit from the Nevada Press Association. In 2015, the UNLV University Libraries digitized and moved past issues online as part of the National Digital Newspaper Program. The ownership of the ''Record'' has changed multiple times.
