Peter Carmeliet
Peter, Baron Carmeliet (; born 8 December 1959) is a Belgian physician and professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Leuven, Belgium). He is also Adjunct Director of the '' VIB Vesalius Research Center, KU Leuven''. Among his research interests are vasculogenesis, angiogenesis, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). In 2016, Carmeliet identified neuron-producing stem cells in the brain. Carmeliet was elected a foreign member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2017. By the number of citations, he is the most cited author of ''Nature Medicine''. Angiogenesis
Angiogenesis is the physiological process through which new blood vessels form from pre-existing vessels, formed in the earlier stage of vasculogenesis. Angiogenesis continues the growth of the vasculature mainly by processes of sprouting and splitting, but processes such as coalescent angiogenesis, vessel elongation and vessel cooption also play a role. Vasculogenesis is the embryonic formation of endothelial cells from mesoderm cell precursors, and from neovascularization, although discussions are not always precise (especially in older texts). Désiré José Louis, Baron Collen (Sint-Truiden, 21 June 1943) is a Belgian emeritus professor of KU Leuven Faculty of Medicine, physician, chemist and biotech-entrepreneur. He made a variety of discoveries in the field of thrombosis, hemostasis and vascular biology. He gained international prominence in the 1980s and 1990s for the discovery of the potential of t-PA (tissue plasminogen activator) as a life-saving drug for patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) or heart attack, and cerebrovascular incidents (CVA) or stroke. Collen demonstrated that the enzyme t-PA, due to its high affinity for fibrin, dissolves blood clots in a patient's body, with less disruption of the overall blood clotting system than the previously available streptokinase. The Francqui Prize is a prestigious Belgian scholarly and scientific prize named after Émile Francqui. Normally annually since 1933, the Francqui Foundation awards it in recognition of the achievements of a scholar or scientist, who at the start of the year still had to be under 50. It currently represents a sum of 250,000 Euros and is awarded in the following three-year rotation of subjects: exact sciences, social sciences or humanities, and biological or medical sciences.
