Pete Smith (announcer)
Peter Philip Smith Order of Australia, OAM (born 29 May 1939) is a retired Australian radio announcer and television voice-over artist. He is primarily known for his work with GTV-9 in Melbourne as their chief staff announcer, including being the announcer on the nationally screened quiz show ''Sale of the Century'' for 21 years. Life and career Early life Smith was born in Melbourne, Victoria, and educated at Wesley College, Melbourne. During his school years, Smith constructed a makeshift radio station from his parents' house narrowcast over bell wire. Smith and Philip Brady (broadcaster), Philip Brady would narrowcast their own show to peoples' homes titled "Broody's Hideout" on Sunday afternoons. Tape recordings of the show were distributed to people as far as the United States. Smith has often joked that "Broody's Hideout" was "the world's first podcast". ABV is the call sign of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's television station in Melbourne, Victoria. History The station began broadcasting on 19 November 1956 and is transmitted throughout the state via a network of relay transmitters. ABV was the second television station founded in Victoria after the first, HSV-7, which opened two weeks earlier on 4 November, as well as being the fourth television station to launch in Australia overall (the first being TCN-9, the Nine Network's Sydney station, the second being HSV-7, the Seven Network's Melbourne station, and the third being ABN-2, the ABC's station in Sydney). The studios are located in Southbank (although formerly in Elsternwick) with the transmitter at Mount Dandenong. Denise Drysdale
Denise Anne Christina Drysdale (born 5 December 1948) is an Australian television presenter, variety entertainer, actress, singer, dancer and comedian. She is often affectionately known as "Ding Dong", a nickname invented by fellow performer Ernie Sigley. She was formerly a co-host of the morning show ''Studio 10''. Ernie Sigley
Ernest William Sigley (2 September 1938 – 15 August 2021) was an Australian Gold Logie award winning television host, comedian, variety performer, radio presenter and singer. Known as a pioneer of radio and television in Australian, he was often styled as a "little Aussie battler" with a larrikin sense of humour. Sigley started his career in radio, before becoming a presenter of TV programs and was best known for his self-titled program ''The Ernie Sigley Show'' and ''Saturday Night Live'' as well as original host of game show '' Wheel of Fortune'', after presenting talk shows with his frequent co-presenter Denise Drysdale in the late 80s and early 90s, he returned to presenting radio broadcasts, until retiring in 2009. Douglas Wilkie Medal
The Douglas Wilkie Medal was an award presented to those who did the least for Australian rules football, in the best and fairest manner. An accolade presented by the Anti-Football League, it was named after Douglas Wilkie, a '' Sun News-Pictorial'' columnist who wrote for the paper during the years 1946–1986. It was Douglas Wilkie who first suggested the notion of an Anti-Football League, which was brought into being by Keith Dunstan. The League existed as a response to the overwhelming obsession of football by the Melbourne public. The award was the League's answer to the Australian Football League's Brownlow Medal, an honour bestowed on footballers who throughout the season play in a skilled and sportsmanlike fashion. ''New Faces'' was an Australian talent show that preceded the British show of the same name, produced at GTV-9 Melbourne. The program began in 1963 under the name ''Kevin Dennis Auditions'', sponsored by a new car dealership, Kevin Dennis Motors, which was run by Kevin Dennis (Dennis Gowing), who was also a well-known face on Australian TV from his catchy 'Update' TV Commercials in the 1960s–70s, which were featured during the breaks of the popular show. The program ran on Saturday mornings. The program name soon changed to ''Kevin Dennis New Faces'', and later simply ''New Faces'', becoming a Sunday night primetime show. Albert Watson Newton (23 July 1938 – 30 October 2021) was an Australian media personality. He was a Logie Hall of Fame inductee, quadruple Gold Logie–winning entertainer, and radio, theatre and television personality and compère. Newton was known for his collaborations opposite Graham Kennedy and subsequently Don Lane on their respective variety shows, and appearances with his wife, singer Patti Newton. ''In Melbourne Tonight'', also known as ''IMT'', was a highly popular nightly Logie award-winning Australian variety show, variety television show produced at GTV-9 Melbourne from 6 May 1957 to 1970. Overview Graham Kennedy was the show's main host and star attraction, but other presenters were often called on to present the show on certain nights. ''In Melbourne Tonight'' had as many as 50 different presenters over its 13 years on air. The format of the show was inspired by the American ''The Tonight Show'' on NBC, but Kennedy's exuberant charisma was the key to the success of ''IMT''.
