Gino Vannelli
Gino Vannelli (born June 16, 1952) is a Canadian rock singer and songwriter who had several hit songs in the 1970s and 1980s. His best-known singles include "People Gotta Move" (1974), " I Just Wanna Stop" (1978), " Living Inside Myself" (1981) and "Wild Horses" (1987). Career Vannelli was born to an Italian family in Montreal, Quebec. His father, (Joseph) Russ Vannelli, sang with the Montreal dance bands of trumpeters Bix Belair and Maynard Ferguson. His early ambition was to be a drummer. He admired Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich, and he played drums in a pop band while he was in high school. In 1969, at the age of seventeen, he signed a contract with RCA Records, using the name Vann Elli. He studied music theory at McGill University in Montreal. ''RPM'' ( and later ) was a Canadian music-industry publication that featured song and album charts for Canada. The publication was founded by Walt Grealis in February 1964, supported through its existence by record label owner Stan Klees. ''RPM'' ceased publication in November 2000. ''Crazy Life'', originally released in 1973 by A&M Records, is the debut album by Canadian singer and songwriter Gino Vannelli. Six years before ''Crazy Life'' came out, Vannelli had gained a recording contract with RCA Canada under the name Van Elli because his real name was viewed "too Italian". However, Van Elli would release only one single under that moniker, 1970's "Gina Bold", before being dropped. With brothers Joe and Ross, Vannelli traveled to New York, back to Montreal, and again to Los Angeles where he was discovered by producer Herb Alpert and gave him a demo tape. ''Powerful People'' is the second studio album of Canadian singer Gino Vannelli. The album was released in 1974, and was produced by Gino and his brother Joe Vannelli. Herb Alpert (who produced Vannelli's first album) is credited as associate producer. After his debut ''Crazy Life'' had failed to chart due to poor record company promotion, Vannelli assembled a band to record his second album. He and brother Joe had played all the instruments on ''Crazy Life,'' but ''Powerful People'' is characterized by Joe Vannelli's first experiments with synthesizers and the use of session musicians. The funky "People Gotta Move" was Vannelli's first hit in the United States, when disco music was gaining popularity. The song reached #22 on Billboard Hot 100 and #21 in Canada. Funk is a music genre that originated in African Americans, African American communities in the mid-1960s when musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music through a mixture of various music genres that were popular among African Americans in the mid-20th century.
