Pencoed RFC
Pencoed Rugby Football Club is a Welsh rugby union team based in Pencoed. Today, Pencoed RFC plays in the Welsh Rugby Union, Division Two West League and is a feeder club for the Ospreys. The team badge consists of a shield containing the lamb of god carrying a St George's standard. The shield is topped by the Prince of Wales three feathers. Pencoed RFC was established in 1888 with the clubhouse situated on the eastern edge of Felindre Rd. In 1980 the Mini & Junior section was formed. Pencoed RFC takes pride in being the home club of Welsh internationals Gareth Thomas, Gareth Cooper, and Gavin Henson plus recently retired three times British Lion Scott Gibbs, all of whom progressed through the junior and youth teams to perform with distinction on the world stage. Pencoed
Pencoed (also Pen-coed); ) is a town and community in the county borough of Bridgend, Wales. It straddles the M4 motorway north east of Bridgend and is situated on the Ewenny River. At the 2011 census it had a population of around 9,166. Etymology and pronunciation The name appears as "Penkoyt" in a 1303 deed of Ewenny Priory and as "Pencoyd" in the seventeenth and eighteenth century. The name is likely a contraction of ''pen-y-coed'' (head/top/end of the forest/wood) and has historically been given as both Pen-coed and Pencoed. While some local business, roads and signage use the hyphenated version, the official spelling in both English and Welsh is "Pencoed". The standard pronunciation in modern Welsh is or . Wayne Hall (rugby Union)
Wayne Hopkin Hall (born 29 January 1958) is a Welsh former rugby union international. Hall was raised in town of Pencoed and attended Pencoed Comprehensive School. The first Pencoed RFC produced player to be capped for Wales, Hall made his debut against Western Samoa as a 30-year old in 1988, by which time he was a veteran hooker with Bridgend. The Welsh Rugby Union Division Three East (also called the SWALEC Division Three South East for sponsorship reasons) is a rugby union league in Wales. Competition format and sponsorship Competition There are 12 clubs in the WRU Division Three South East. During the course of a season (which lasts from September to May) each club plays the others twice, once at their home ground and once at that of their opponents for a total of 22 games for each club, with a total of 132 games in each season. Teams receive four points for a win and two point for a draw, an additional bonus win is awarded to either team if they score four tries or more in a single match. No points are awarded for a loss though the losing team can gain a bonus point for finishing the match within seven points of the winning team. Sam Costelow
Sam Costelow (born 10 January 2001) is a Welsh professional rugby union player who plays as a fly-half for United Rugby Championship club Scarlets and the Wales national team. Early life Born in Llantrisant and raised in Pencoed, Costelow spent time with the Ospreys youth teams before moving on to Leicester Tigers in 2018. Costelow attended Pencoed Comprehensive and Oakham School. Tomas John Reffell (born 27 April 1999) is a Welsh professional rugby union player who plays as a flanker for Premiership Rugby club Leicester Tigers and the Wales national team. Club career Reffell began his junior career at his local club Pencoed RFC aged 4. He was part of the Ospreys under 16s and joined Leicester aged 15. Reffell made his debut for Leicester Tigers on 10 November 2017 in a 33–31 defeat against Bath at the Rec in the Anglo-Welsh Cup. Hugh Williams-Jones
Hugh Williams-Jones (born 10 January 1963) is a former Welsh rugby union international. Williams-Jones, was born in Bryncethin, where his rugby career began, attended Ynysawdre Comprehensive School and was a Police Officer by profession. Williams-Jones represented Wales Youth, Bridgend RFC and Pontypridd RFC before joining South Wales Police in 1984. He represented South Wales Police RFC on 355 occasions between 1984 and 1993, then joined Llanelli where he made a further 128 appearances before retiring from rugby in 1998. A prop, who was equally at home on either side of the scrum, Williams-Jones earned 17 caps for Wales and was a replacement on 31 further occasions when he did not take the field. James Bater
James Bater (born 7 January 1980) is a Welsh former rugby union footballer who played as a flanker at club level for Swansea RFC, and in the Celtic League for the Ospreys and the Scarlets. Born in Bridgend, Bater began his professional rugby career at Swansea RFC, before moving to the Ospreys at the team's inception at the dawn of regional rugby in Wales. In his three years at the Ospreys, Bater made a total of 67 appearances, scoring six tries. However, due to the rise of future Wales captain Ryan Jones and the signings of Filo Tiatia and Jono Gibbes, Bater found himself on the fringes of the first team at the Ospreys. The Scarlets came in with a bid for him, and he was allowed to leave. Ian Scott Gibbs (born 23 January 1971) is a Welsh former rugby footballer who has represented Wales and the Lions in rugby union and Wales and Great Britain in rugby league.
