Penang Road is a major thoroughfare in the city of George Town, within the Malaysian state of Penang. It runs between Farquhar Street to the north and Komtar to the south. It is a one-way road, with traffic directed southwards towards Komtar. As a major artery within the city centre, Penang Road frequently experiences heavy traffic, as it is home to a number of attractions such as the bars at Upper Penang Road and Chowrasta Market, one of the few wet markets still in operation within the UNESCO World Heritage Site. In particular, Chowrasta Market offers a variety of local produce and pastries unique to Penang, such as nutmeg and ''tau sar pneah'' biscuits. Penang Island City Council
The Penang Island City Council ( ) is the local government that administers the city of George Town, which includes the entirety of Penang Island. Francis Light
Francis Light ( – 21 October 1794) was a British sailor and explorer best known for founding the colony of Penang and its capital city of George Town in 1786. Light was the father of William Light, who founded the city of Adelaide in South Australia in 1836. Early years Francis Light was born in Dallinghoo, Suffolk and baptised on 15December 1740. His mother was Mary Light. Taken in by a relative, William Negus, Light was sent to attend the Woodbridge Grammar School in 1747.. Merchant Hotel, Penang
Merchant Hotel is a hotel within George Town in the Malaysian state of Penang. Located at Penang Road within the city's Central Business District (CBD), the 12-storey building was originally opened as Hotel Ambassador in 1966. It was once the tallest building in the city, but in 1991 the hotel saw a change in ownership as a result of legal action taken against its original owner. History As early as 1962, The Straits Times reported on the construction of a new 11-storey building at the junction of Penang Road and Muntri Street. Leith Street is a narrow road within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the city of George Town, Penang, George Town within the States and federal territories of Malaysia, Malaysian state of Penang.
