Merchant Hotel, Penang
Merchant Hotel is a hotel within George Town in the Malaysian state of Penang. Located at Penang Road within the city's Central Business District (CBD), the 12-storey building was originally opened as Hotel Ambassador in 1966. It was once the tallest building in the city, but in 1991 the hotel saw a change in ownership as a result of legal action taken against its original owner. History As early as 1962, The Straits Times reported on the construction of a new 11-storey building at the junction of Penang Road and Muntri Street. This building was intended to house Hotel Ambassador and ultimately contained 80 rooms spread across 12 floors. In 1966, the then federal Minister of Commerce and Industry Lim Swee Aun officiated the hotel's launch. Penang Road is a major thoroughfare in the city of George Town, within the Malaysian state of Penang. It runs between Farquhar Street to the north and Komtar to the south. It is a one-way road, with traffic directed southwards towards Komtar. Rifle Range is a residential neighbourhood within the city of George Town in the Malaysian state of Penang. Located west of the city centre, the area was once home to a shooting range used by the British Army. The Malaysian federal government constructed nine blocks of low-cost public housing at the area in 1969, making them the first residential high-rises in Penang. Until 1977, the Rifle Range flats were considered the tallest buildings in George Town. The Penang State Legislative Assembly is the legislature of the Malaysian state of Penang. It is a unicameral institution, consisting of a total of 40 elected lawmakers representing single-member constituencies throughout Penang. The state legislature, whose members are called "State Assemblymen", convenes at the Penang State Assembly Building in Penang's capital city of George Town. Lonely Planet is a travel guide book publisher. Founded in Australia in 1973, the company has printed over 150 million books. History 20th century Lonely Planet was founded by married couple Maureen Wheeler, Maureen and Tony Wheeler. In 1972, they embarked on an overland trip through Europe and Asia to Australia following the route of the Oxford and Cambridge Far Eastern Expedition. The company name originates from the Mondegreen, misheard "lovely planet" in a song written by Matthew Moore. Penang High Court
The Penang High Court, founded in 1808, is the birthplace of Malaysia's judiciary system. It is housed inside a Palladian-style building at Light Street, George Town, Penang. The High Court sits at the top of Penang's hierarchy of courts. The current courthouse was built in the 1900s to replace the original structure that was built at the same site in 1809. The Penang High Court, then known as the Supreme Court, had been established in 1808 within Fort Cornwallis nearby, the first such court to be set up in the Malay Peninsula.
