Pegasids
The meteor shower of the July Pegasids occurs between July 4 and Aug 8. It is a weak meteor shower that has its maximum around July 11 having a ZHR of only 3 meteors per hour. The meteors have, however, an atmosphere entry speed of about 64 km/s. The Radiant of the Pegasids is in the constellation of Pegasus, around 5 degrees to the west of the star α Pegasi. The origin of this meteor shower is probably the comet C/1979 Y1 (Bradfield). C/1979 Y1 has an orbital period of 308 years, and should return around 2287. C/1979 Y1 (Bradfield)
C/1979 Y1 (Bradfield), also known as ''Comet 1979X'' and ''1979l'', is a long period comet discovered by William A. Bradfield on 24 December 1979. The comet has an orbital period of 308 ± 6 years and last passed perihelion on 21 December 1979. It is considered to be the parent body of the July Pegasids meteor shower. It is expected to next come to perihelion around 2287. Observational history The comet was discovered by amateur astronomer William A. Bradfield on 24 December 1979, using a 150mm f5.5 refractor at Dernancourt, South Australia. It was the 10th comet discovered by Bradfield, who had been searching for 67 hours following the discovery of his previous comet. The comet was discovered three days after perihelion and was estimated to have an apparent magnitude of 5. Bradfield also reported it had a tail over a degree long. Pegasus (constellation)
Pegasus is a constellation in the northern sky, named after the winged horse Pegasus in Greek mythology. It was one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd-century astronomer Ptolemy, and is one of the IAU designated constellations, 88 constellations recognised today. With an apparent magnitude varying between 2.37 and 2.45, the brightest star in Pegasus is the orange supergiant Epsilon Pegasi, also known as Enif, which marks the horse's muzzle. Meteor Shower
A meteor shower is a celestial event in which a number of meteors are observed to radiate, or originate, from one point in the night sky. These meteors are caused by streams of cosmic debris called meteoroids entering Earth's atmosphere at extremely high speeds on parallel trajectories. Most meteors are smaller than a grain of sand, so almost all of them disintegrate and never hit the Earth's surface. Very intense or unusual meteor showers are known as meteor outbursts and meteor storms, which produce at least 1,000 meteors an hour, most notably from the Leonids. Zenithal Hourly Rate
In astronomy, the zenithal hourly rate (ZHR) of a meteor shower is the number of meteors a single observer would see in an hour of peak activity if the radiant was at the zenith, assuming the seeing conditions are perfect (when and where stars with apparent magnitudes up to 6.5 are visible to the naked eye). The rate that can effectively be seen is nearly always lower and decreases the closer the radiant is to the horizon. Calculation The formula to calculate the ZHR is: ZHR = \cfrac where \overline = \cfrac represents the hourly rate of the observer. Radiant (meteor Shower)
The radiant or apparent radiant of a meteor shower is the celestial point in the sky from which (from the point of view of a terrestrial observer) the paths of meteors appear to originate. The Perseids, for example, are meteors which appear to come from a point within the constellation of Perseus. Meteor paths appear at random locations in the sky, but the apparent paths of two or more meteors from the same shower will diverge from the radiant. The radiant is the vanishing point of the meteor paths, which are parallel lines in three-dimensional space, as seen from the perspective of the observer, who views a two-dimensional projection against the sky. The geometric effect is identical to crepuscular rays, where parallel sunbeams appear to diverge. Alpha Pegasi
Alpha Pegasi (α Pegasi, abbreviated Alpha Peg, α Peg), formally named Markab , is the third-brightest star in the constellation of Pegasus and one of the four stars in the asterism known as the Great Square of Pegasus. Properties Alpha Pegasi has a stellar classification of A0 IV, indicating that it is an A-type subgiant star that has exhausted the hydrogen at its core and has evolved beyond the main sequence. Its spectrum has also been classified as B9V and B9.5III. A comet is an icy, small Solar System body that warms and begins to release gases when passing close to the Sun, a process called outgassing. Horizon
The horizon is the apparent curve that separates the surface of a celestial body from its sky when viewed from the perspective of an observer on or near the surface of the relevant body. This curve divides all viewing directions based on whether it intersects the relevant body's surface or not. The American Meteor Society, Ltd. (AMS) is a non-profit scientific organization established to encourage and support the research activities of both amateur and professional astronomers who are interested in the field of meteor astronomy.
