Parallel Horizontal
"Parallel Horizontal" is a song by the indie pop band Marine Research. It first appeared as a single on 27 July 1999 and then as the opening track on their only album ''Sounds from the Gulf Stream'' on 24 August. Its two B-sides were recorded for John Peel's Radio 1 show in May 1999. Neither song featured on ''Sounds from the Gulf Stream'' and so were exclusive to this release. Amelia Fletcher and Peter Momtchiloff had first recorded a session for Peel in 1987 when they were members of Talulah Gosh. A music video was made for the song. "Parallel Horizontal" garnered several positive reviews. Paul Connolly in ''The Times'' described it as ''"Perfect sunny day pop music"'', while Dale Kattack in ''Nightshift'' wrote: ''"it's fantastically merry and uncomplicated but for all its sweetness there's barely a trace of tweeness to be heard"''. Marine Research
Marine Research were an indiepop group, based in Oxford/London (UK), formed in 1997 by four of the five members of Heavenly ( Amelia Fletcher, Peter Momtchiloff, Cathy Rogers and Rob Pursey), following the death of Heavenly drummer Mathew Fletcher. The band were joined on drums by DJ Downfall (John Stanley), who is also a solo recording artist. After the band disbanded in 1999, vocalist and keyboardist Cathy Rogers moved to the United States of America, and became well known for producing and starring in the television show '' Junkyard Wars''. Lead singer and songwriter Amelia Fletcher was also in the group Talulah Gosh and later recorded with Tender Trap, alongside bassist Rob Pursey and drummer John Stanley. Peter Momtchiloff
Peter Momtchiloff (born 10 March 1962) is a British guitarist and bassist. He was educated at Winchester College and Worcester College, Oxford. His musical career began in 1978 playing bass guitar in Winchester band The Big Figure. At Oxford he continued as a bass player and vocalist in Ron and His Beat Busters (under the name Miguel Horton) and Communist Alliance. These outfits played a combination of cover versions and original material with new wave, R&B and rockabilly influences. As a guitarist he played in country blues trio The Shovel Robinson King Biscuit Country Blue Band. Momtchiloff was a founding member of the seminal twee pop bands Talulah Gosh, Heavenly, and its later incarnation Marine Research. In 1999, he joined Jessica Griffin in her band the Would-Be-Goods. Twee Pop
Twee pop is a subgenre of indie pop that originates from the 1986 ''NME'' compilation '' C86''. Twee pop gets its name from the aesthetic of twee, which is known for its simplicity and childlike innocence. Some of its defining features are boy-girl harmonies, catchy melodies, and lyrics about love. For many years, prominent independent record labels associated with twee pop were Sarah Records (in the UK) and K Records (in the US). Twee pop gained popularity in the 1990s and has seen a recent revival in the 2020s. Etymology The definition of twee is something "excessively or affectedly quaint, pretty, or sentimental," supposedly born from a childish mispronunciation of the word sweet. Founded 1992 by John Loder, Southern Records is an independent record label (Loder also ran the recording facility Southern Studios). It is based in London and until 2008 had offices in the United States, France and Berlin. The label is closely associated with Crass Records, Corpus Christi Records and Dischord Records. Talulah Gosh
Talulah Gosh were an English guitar-pop group from Oxford, and one of the leading bands of the indiepop movement, taking their name from the headline of an NME interview with Clare Grogan. They supposedly formed in 1986 when Amelia Fletcher and Elizabeth Price, both wearing Pastels badges, met at a club in Oxford. Their original line-up comprised Amelia Fletcher (vocals, guitar, principal songwriter), her younger brother Mathew Fletcher (drums), Peter Momtchiloff (lead guitar), Rob Pursey (bass) and Elizabeth Price (vocals). John Peel
John Robert Parker Ravenscroft (30 August 1939 – 25 October 2004), better known as John Peel, was an English radio presenter and journalist. He was the longest-serving of the original disc jockeys on BBC Radio 1, broadcasting regularly from 1967 until his death in 2004.
