Paddy Ruschitzko
Paddy "Rusty" Ruschitzko (29 April 1917 – 4 March 2004) was an American-born Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Clonad and was a member of the Laois senior inter-county team from the 1930s until the 1950s. Ruschitzko captained Laois in their last All-Ireland final appearance in 1949. Biography Patrick Ruschitzko was brought up in Muine Bheag, County Carlow, where his mother brought the family on the death of her husband. Ruschitzko was educated locally, however, the family later moved to Mountmellick, County Laois. It was here that his hurling skills were first noted. Ruschitzko, however, later emigrated to England for a period. On his return he joined the staff of Irish Worsted Mills in Portlaoise. He ended up as manager of the mills and remained there until the firm's closure in 1973. He married Lillian Dunne and had three children, two girls and one boy who died at a very young age. Clonad GAA
Clonad GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association hurling club in County Laois, Ireland which fields teams from Under-10 right up to adult level. While Clonad GAA club has successfully fielded underage and adult Gaelic football teams in the past, football is not played in the club at present. These days, club members interested in football usually play with the neighbouring football clubs at The Heath and Ballyroan. The club colours are green with a gold sash. History Although it is known that a GAA club existed in the area in the late 19th century and that the nearby Barrington estate was a patron of a hurling team in the 18th century, the present club was founded in 1915 by Lar Brady and Jim Bergin to promote hurling in the country area to the south of Portlaoise. Clonad was promoted to the senior grade in 1927 and won its first Laois senior hurling title in 1930. All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship
The GAA Hurling All-Ireland Minor Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Electric Ireland GAA Hurling All-Ireland Minor Championship) is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition for male players under the age of 17 in Ireland and has been contested every year - except for a three-year absence during the Emergency - since 1928. The final, currently held on the third Sunday in August, is the culmination of a series of games played during July and August, with the winning team receiving the Irish Press Cup. The qualification procedures for the championship have changed several times throughout its history. County Laois ( ; gle, Contae Laoise) is a county in Ireland. It is part of the Eastern and Midland Region and in the province of Leinster. It was known as Queen's County from 1556 to 1922. Pat Stakelum
Pat Stakelum (6 May 1927 – 4 April 2008) was an Irish people, Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Holycross–Ballycahill GAA, Holycross–Ballycahill and was a member of the Tipperary GAA, Tipperary senior inter-county team from 1947 until 1957. Stakelum captained Tipperary to the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, All-Ireland title in 1949. Playing career Club Pat Stakelum played his club hurling with his local Holycross–Ballycahill GAA, Holycross–Ballycahill club and enjoyed much success. Although not regarded as one of the most successful clubs in the county he won three senior Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship, county titles in 1948 (the club's first county championship title), 1951 and 1954.
