Pat Stakelum
Pat Stakelum (6 May 1927 – 4 April 2008) was an Irish people, Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Holycross–Ballycahill GAA, Holycross–Ballycahill and was a member of the Tipperary GAA, Tipperary senior inter-county team from 1947 until 1957. Stakelum captained Tipperary to the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, All-Ireland title in 1949. Playing career Club Pat Stakelum played his club hurling with his local Holycross–Ballycahill GAA, Holycross–Ballycahill club and enjoyed much success. Although not regarded as one of the most successful clubs in the county he won three senior Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship, county titles in 1948 (the club's first county championship title), 1951 and 1954. Holycross–Ballycahill GAA
Holycross–Ballycahill GAA is a Tipperary GAA club which is located in County Tipperary, Ireland. Both hurling and Gaelic football are played in the "Mid-Tipperary" divisional competitions. The club that is centred on the villages of Holycross and Ballycahill and is located around five miles outside Thurles. History The club was founded in 1885. Holycross–Ballycahill GAA club compete in the Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship. The period from 1947 to 1953 was the club's golden era. Four Mid Tipperary Senior Titles and three Senior County Tipperary titles in 1948, 1951 and 1954, under the captaincy of Francis Maher. A Mid Senior title was won in 1966, before the club reverted to the Junior ranks in 1971. A Junior County championship win in 1974, brought a revival to Holycross–Ballycahill GAA, which resulted in Mid Senior titles in 1978, 1985, 1989 and 1990. Jimmy Kennedy (hurler Born 1926)
Jimmy Kennedy (1926–2007) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling at various times with his local clubs Kiladangan in Tipperary and UCD in Dublin. Kennedy also played with the Tipperary and Dublin senior inter-county teams from 1946 until 1951. Biography Jimmy Kennedy was born in Kildangan, County Tipperary in 1926. He was educated at the local national school and later attended St. Flannans College in Ennis, County Clare. Here his hurling skills were fully developed and he won Harty Cup and All-Ireland colleges titles in 1944. Kennedy capped off a memorable year with membership of the victorious Munster colleges inter-provincial team. Kennedy subsequently studied agricultural science at University College Dublin. He achieved his degree in the late 1940s and took up employment with Minch Norton Maltings in Nenagh in 1950. Railway Cup
The GAA Interprovincial Championship ( ga, An Corn Idir-Chúigeach) or Railway Cup (''Corn an Iarnróid'') is the name of two annual Gaelic football and hurling competitions held between the provinces of Ireland. The Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster GAA teams are composed of the best players from the counties in each province. The games are organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association. The Railway Cup was a revival of the Railway Shield which ran from 1905 to 1907 (football) and from 1905 to 1908 (hurling). The first Railway Cup competitions (the name is due to the donation of the trophy by Irish Rail) were held in 1927, with Munster winning the first football title and Leinster winning the first hurling title. Jimmy Smyth (hurler)
James Smyth (1 January 1931 – 9 February 2013) was an Irish hurler who played as a full-forward for the Clare senior team. Smyth made his first appearance for the team during the 1948–49 National Hurling League and was a regular member of the starting fifteen until his retirement after the 1967 championship. During that time he won one Oireachtas medal and one Thomond Feis medal, and was a Munster final runner-up on two occasions. At club level Smyth was a five-time county club championship medallist with Ruan. After retirement from play Smyth, in 1984 he was named on a special Hurling Team of the Century made up of players never to have won an All-Ireland medal. In 2000 he was named on the Munster Hurling Team of the Millennium. Tom Cheasty
Thomas Cheasty (4 February 1934 – 10 August 2007) was an Irish hurler who played as a centre-forward at senior level for the Waterford county team. Born in Knockaderry near Ballyduff, County Waterford, Cheasty first arrived on the inter-county scene as a dual player in the minor grade with Waterford. He made his senior debut in the 1954–55 National Hurling League. Cheasty went on to play a key part for Waterford in what has come to be known as a defining era for the county, and won one All-Ireland medal and three Munster medals. Cheasty represented the Munster inter-provincial team on a number of occasions throughout his career, winning three Railway Cup medals in 1958, 1960 and 1961. Christy Ring
Nicholas Christopher Michael Ring (30 October 1920 – 2 March 1979) was an Irish hurler whose league and championship career at senior level with the Cork county team spanned twenty-four years from 1939 to 1963. He established many championship records, including career appearances (65), scoring tally (33-208) and number of All-Ireland medals won (8); however, these records were subsequently bested by a number of players. Ring is widely regarded as one of the greatest hurlers in the history of the game, with many former players, commentators and fans rating him as the number one player of all time. Tim Ryan (hurler)
Timothy Ryan (1923 – 26 February 1996) was an Irish hurler. At club level he played with Borris–Ileigh and was also a member of the Tipperary senior hurling team. Career Ryan first played hurling at club level with Borris–Ileigh. He progressed onto the club's senior team and won a Mid Tipperary SHC title in 1949, before later being a part of the club's first team to win the Tipperary SHC title. After the club switched divisions, Ryan won five North Tipperary SHC titles and two more Tipperary SHC titles, including one as team captain in 1953. Ryan first played for Tipperary as a member of the minor team in 1941. He joined the senior team in 1950 and, after winning a Munster SHC medal, lined out at wing-forward when Tipperary beat Wexford in the 1951 All-Ireland final. Nicky Rackard
Nicholas Rackard (28 April 1922 – 10 April 1976) was an Irish hurler whose league and championship career with the Wexford senior team spanned seventeen years from 1940 to 1957. He established many championship scoring records, including being the top championship goal-scorer of all time with 59 goals. Rackard is widely regarded as one of the greatest hurlers in the history of the game. Born in Killane, County Wexford, Rackard was introduced to sport by his father who had hoped he would become a cricketer. His uncle, John Doran, won an All-Ireland medal as a Gaelic footballer with Wexford in 1918 and it was hurling and Gaelic football that Rackard developed a talent for.
