This is a list of notable newspapers and media outlets in the Maldives. The Maldives constitution guarantees freedom of expression as long as it is "not contrary to any tenet of Islam". There are both state-run and non-state media in the country. A report released in December 2023 by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) found that online news websites and platforms were the most popular news media accessed by Maldivian respondents (61%), while newspapers and magazines were mentioned by only 9%. Sandhaanu
''Sandhaanu'' (meaning ''Throne'' in English) was an online political news magazine in the Maldives. It was launched in 1999. Its main editor Ahmed Didi together with his main contributors Ibrahim Luthfee and Mohamed Zaki were sentenced to life in prison while another editor, Fathimath Nisreen, to 10 years in prison in 2003 for their criticism of President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and his government. One of their contributors (Ibrahim Luthfee) managed to escape from prison and went under the protection of the Swiss government. ''Haveeru Daily'' () was the longest serving daily newspaper in the Maldives, established on 1 January 1979. Haveeru Online is owned by Haveeru Media Group – a company registered under the founder, Mohamed Zahir Hussain's three children – Lubna Zahir Hussain, Leena Zahir Hussain and Vail Zahir Hussain. Name The name ''Haveeru'' symbolises the onset of the cool evening time after the heat of the day, which is also the time when the newspaper is brought out. In Dhivehi literature, "haveeru kurun" means the get-together of poets and writers for literary exchanges. Thus, it was decided that the newspaper's name should also symbolise news, information and literary learning. ''Maldives Independent'' is a news outlet which is based in Maldives. It was conceived in 2004 as Minivan News but was renamed to Maldives Independent in 2015. History The outlet was first named Minivan News ('Minivan' meaning Independent) founded by members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on 29 November 2004. ''Adhadhu'' is an online news website based in Malé, Maldives. Adhadhu's journalists has received many awards from the Maldives Media Council. History Adhadhu was registered with the Ministry of Home Affairs on 22 February 2022. On 20 March 2023, Editor-in-chief Hussain Fiyaz Moosa was sent text messages which contained death threats after publishing an article about organised crime and religious extremism. In 2024, Adhadhu won the politics, sports, video documentary, investigative journalism (audio and video) categories at the Journalism Awards. Raajje TV
Raajje TV is a television channel based in the Maldives, known for its news coverage, entertainment programs, and cultural content. The channel started broadcasting on 5 June 2008 as Future TV, adopting its current name in 2011. Arson Attack on Raajje TV On 7 October 2013, the channel's television station in Queen of the Night building in Malé was targeted in an arson attack.
