P.J. Brophy
Patrick J. (P.J.) Brophy BD (1919 – 1998) was an Irish Catholic priest, historian and educator. Work Fr. Brophy taught and served as President of Carlow College from 1970 until 1974. From Castlemore in Tullow, County Carlow. A regular syndicated columnist and contributor to local newspapers e.g. ''The Nationalist and Leinster Leader'' and also appeared on television programmes such as ''The Late Late Show'' and ''Nightlight'' on RTÉ. He also contributed to ''The Irish Ecclesiastical Record'' and ''The Furrow'' magazines. Brophy was also a historian and founding member of ''The Old Carlow Society'' (now '' The Carlow Historical & Archaeological Society'') in 1946, and he was first editor of its journal, ''The Carlovana''. Tullow
Tullow (; , formerly ''Tulach Ó bhFéidhlim/ Tullowphelim'') is a market town in County Carlow, Ireland. It is located on the River Slaney where the N81 road intersects with the R725. , the population was 4,673. History There is a statue of Father John Murphy, one of the leaders of the 1798 Rebellion, who was captured near Tullow and executed in the Market Square on 2 July. There is a small museum with information about this period and other local history. Sport Gaelic Sports Saint Patrick's are the GAA club in Tullow who currently compete in the Carlow Junior A Football Championship and have been crowned champions on ten occasions. They also compete in the Carlow Intermediate Hurling Championship. Carlow Historical & Archaeological Society
Carlow Historical & Archaeological Society (formerly The Old Carlow Society) is a historical society in Co. Carlow, Ireland, founded in 1946. Donal McCartney, Professor Emeritus of Modern Irish History, University College Dublin is the current president of the society. The Society organises Lectures on local history and exhibitions, and has also erected plaques on buildings historical interest in County Carlow, such as at Milford Mills, and Carlow Railway stations. Founding The Society was founded in 1946 as The Old Carlow Society. The society’s first chairman was Fr. Monsignor (; it, monsignore ) is an honorific form of address or title for certain male clergy members, usually members of the Roman Catholic Church.
