Oswald Critchley
Oswald Asheton Critchley (1864 – 1935 in London, England) was a Canadian territorial level politician, rancher and also served as a soldier in the Canadian Forces during World War I. Personal life Critchley began ranching in Southern Alberta in the 1880s. He purchased the Stapleton Ranch which was situated on the Bow River. His first wife, Maria Newbolt, had two sons. She died during the birth of her second son. Critchley quickly remarried to Ms. Winifred Holt. Political career In the 1894 Northwest Territories general election Critchley ran for a seat in the West Calgary electoral district. He defeated two other candidates coming out on top of a close three-way split to capture the district. Critchley only served in the Northwest Territories Legislature for a single term, choosing not to run again at the dissolution of the Legislature in 1898. Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) (LdSH C is a regular armoured regiment of the Canadian Army and is Canada’s only tank regiment. Currently based in Edmonton, Alberta, the regiment is part of 3rd Canadian Division's 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group. Members of the regiment are commonly called ''Strathconas'' or ''Strats'' as a short form. Canadian Expeditionary Force
The Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) was the expeditionary field force of Canada during the First World War. It was formed following Britain’s declaration of war on Germany on 15 August 1914, with an initial strength of one infantry division. The division subsequently fought at Ypres on the Western Front, with a newly raised second division reinforcing the committed units to form the Canadian Corps. The CEF and corps was eventually expanded to four infantry divisions, which were all committed to the fighting in France and Belgium along the Western Front. A fifth division was partially raised in 1917, but was broken up in 1918 and used as reinforcements following heavy casualties.
