Oslo Jazzfestival
Oslo International Jazz Festival (Oslo Jazzfestival, established 1986 in Norway) is a Norwegians, Norwegian music event, held in August, with a focus on music form the jazz genre, performed on stages in Oslo. History The pilot project (1984–1985) was initiated by Aage Teigen. The first festival in 1986, had more than forty volunteers and the event received 350 000 Norwegian kroner in donations from Oslo Municipality. The music was largely traditional jazz, Dixieland, New Orleans jazz, etc. The organization became a Foundation (nonprofit), Foundation in 1995, led by Truls Helweg, chairman of the board since 1995) and permanently appointed General Manager (Aage Teigen), at a time when the budget was over 5 million Norwegian kroner. Teigen was in 2002 awarded the Oslo City Artist Award for his commitment. In 2006, the festival held 70 concerts (of these 15 free) with 450 musicians on 18 stages with around 70,000 spectators. Odd André Elveland
Odd André Elveland (born 16 July 1965) is a Norwegian jazz musician (saxophone), composer, arranger and jazz teacher. Career Elveland is educated on the jazz program at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Trondheim Musikkonservatorium). As a performer he has toured in Norway with his own quartet with Håvard Wiik, Mats Eilertsen and Jarle Vespestad. He also has appeared with a trio with Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Thomas Strønen. He has recorded with Ditlef Eckhoff/Einar Iversen, The Sinatra Songbook (including solo performance with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra), The Swing Pack (Urban Breeze), Per Husby/Anne Lande and others. Erlend Skomsvoll
Erlend Fredrik Skomsvoll (born 12 May 1969) is a Norwegian jazz musician (piano, keyboards, accordion, and tuba), band leader, composer and arranger, known from his own band Skomsork and the band Wibutee with Live Maria Roggen, Madrugada, and Kaizers Orchestra. Jazzland Recordings is a Norwegian jazz and improvised music label based in Oslo, Norway, often associated with nu jazz. It was founded in 1996 by pianist Bugge Wesseltoft to release his "New Conception of Jazz" and operate as a standalone label. Bugge Wesseltoft
Jens Christian Bugge Wesseltoft (born 1 February 1964) is a Norwegian jazz pianist, composer, and producer, son of jazz guitarist Erik Wesseltoft. Career In 1989, Wesseltoft collaborated with the Knut Riisnæs Quartet and was soon after contacted by Arild Andersen to join in on commissioned work for Vossajazz—released on the album ''Sagn'' (1990)—and the follow-up ''Arv'' (1993). He worked with Jan Garbarek on his ''Molde Canticle'', a commission from Moldejazz, released on the 1990 album '' I Took Up the Runes''. Arild Andersen
Arild Andersen (born 27 October 1945) is a Norwegian jazz musician bassist, known as the most famous Norwegian bass player in the international jazz scene. Career Andersen was born at Strømmen, Norway. He started his musical career as jazz guitarist in the Riverside Swing Group in Lillestrøm (1961–63), started playing double bass in 1964, and soon became part of the core jazz bands in Oslo. Bodil Niska
Bodil Aileen Niska (born 21 August 1954 in Vadsø, Norway) is a Norwegian jazz saxophonist known for her recordings of jazz standards. Career Raised in Hammerfest Municipality, she was taught music by her father, the accordion player Aksel Niska, and studied under the guidance of Kjell Bartholdsen, and ran the jazz club "Montenegro" (1979–89). After moving southward in Norway in 1990, Niska collaborated within the trio "Girl Talk" from 1992, the other members being Tine Asmundsen (double bass) and Elizabeth Walker. They recorded the album ''Talkin' Jazz'' (1996). She formed the Bodil Niska Quartet, including Per Husby (piano), Stig Hvalryg (bass) and Roger Johansen (drums), at the Oslo Jazz Festival in 2005. Karin Krog
Karin Krog (born 15 May 1937) is a Norwegian Vocal jazz, jazz singer. Life and career Krog began singing jazz as a teenager and attracted attention while performing in jam sessions in Oslo. In 1955, she was hired by the pianist Kjell Karlsen to sing in his sextet. In 1962, she started her first band, and that same year she became a student of the Norwegian-American singer Anne Brown. Krog studied with Brown until 1969. In the 1960s, she performed with the rhythm and blues band Public Enemies (group), Public Enemies, releasing the hit singles "Sunny" and "Watermelon Man".) Hank O’Neal (born Harold L. O'Neal Jr.; June 5, 1940) is an American music producer, author, and photographer. Background Hank O'Neal's mother, Sarah Christian O’Neal, was a homemaker from Tyler, Texas; she was musical and intellectual. Hank's father was a soldier in the U.S. Army in Texas and the Pacific (1929–1947) and after World War II, an educator and public school superintendent in upstate New York (1953–72). Hank O'Neal grew up in Texas, Bloomington, Indiana; and Syracuse, New York. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1962. Early career O’Neal worked for the CIA from 1963 until 1976. Gerhard Aspheim
Gerhard Aspheim (27 September 1930 – 21 November 2009) was a Norwegian jazz trombonist. Career Aspheim was a member of Norway's first trad jazz band 'Dixie Serenaders' from 1949 to 1952, of 'Big Chief Jazzband' from 1952 to 1978 and then initiated his own orchestra Aspheim Oldtimers in 1979. They appeared at several jazz festivals in Norway and Germany and toured extensively in Europe. The orchestra has seven album releases. He also ran and developed the family business 'Aspheim Flygel- og Pianosenter', which he acquired in 1954 and developed into one of Scandinavia's largest grand piano and piano companies. Aspheim was the eldest and a natural leader type. People thought he was the "Big Chief", and he was the obvious chairman of "The Big Chief Jazz Club" in the basement of Majorstuhuset (1953–65). Eivind Solberg
Eivind Holt Solberg (22 May 1933 – 19 March 2008) from Norwegian Music Information was a Norwegian jazz trumpeter, known as the founder of Big Chief Jazz Band (1952 -), which is one of the oldest of its kind. He initially played in New Orleans Hot Dogs (1950–1951) with friends from Berg Upper Secondary School. Solberg was often in New Orleans and became a friend of Louis Armstrong. He was instrumental in the establishment and operation of several important concert halls in Oslo, including Big Chief Jazz Club, Kunstnerkroa, Oslo Jazz Circle, Metropol Jazz Center and Downtown.
