''Opisthoteuthis'', from Ancient Greek wikt:ὄπισθεν, ὄπισθεν (''ópisthen''), meaning "back", and wikt:τευθίς, τευθίς (''teuthís''), meaning "squid", is a genus of Cirrata, cirrate octopuses, sometimes known as flapjack octopuses, which are found in all the world's oceans. Behavior Like other Cirrata, cirrates, octopuses in'' Opisthoteuthis'' are generally small, and many dwell in the deep sea. They have Cirrus (biology), cirri on their arms, internal Cirrate shell, shells to support their bodies, and muscular fins for steering. Like octopuses of Grimpoteuthis, opisthoteuthids have been seen resting or crawling on the seafloor. The Gulf of Mexico () is an oceanic basin and a marginal sea of the Atlantic Ocean, mostly surrounded by the North American continent. It is bounded on the northeast, north, and northwest by the Gulf Coast of the United States; on the southwest and south by the Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo; and on the southeast by Cuba.
