Once Caldas S.A., simply known as Once Caldas, is a professional Colombian Association football, football team based in Manizales, that currently plays in the Categoría Primera A. The club plays its home games at Estadio Palogrande. The club was founded in 1961 after the merger of Deportes Caldas and Deportivo Manizales (also known as Once Deportivo). The club has won the Categoría Primera A four times, but is mainly known for its 2004 Copa Libertadores title. Estadio Palogrande
Estadio Palogrande is a multi-purpose stadium in Manizales, Colombia with a capacity of 31,611. It is currently used mostly for football (soccer) matches as home venue of the Once Caldas, winners of the 2004 Copa Libertadores. History The first Palogrande was built in 1936 and demolished in 1993, and the current Palogrande was inaugurated in 1994. With renovations made for the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia, the stadium capacity dropped from 42,678 to 32,000 people, although it was capped at 28,678 for the tournament. 1999 Copa Libertadores
The 1999 Copa Libertadores was the 40th edition of the Copa Libertadores, South America's premier club championship. It was held between February 21 and June 16. Palmeiras became the champions after beating Deportivo Cali on penalties for the first time in their history. from Brazil, after the team defeated Deportivo Cali, from Colombia, in the decisive match held at Estádio Palestra Itália, São Paulo, on June 16, 1999. The match ended 2-1 in regular time and 4-3 in a penalty shootout. The CONMEBOL Libertadores, also known as Copa Libertadores de América (), is an annual continental club football competition organized by CONMEBOL since 1960. It is the highest level of competition in South American club football. The tournament is named after the '' Libertadores'' (Spanish and Portuguese for ''liberators''), the leaders of the Spanish American wars of independence and Brazilian Independence, so a literal translation of its former name into English is "''Liberators of America Cup''". The 1998 Categoría Primera A season, known as Copa Mustang 1998 for sponsoring purposes, was the 51st season of the Categoría Primera A, Colombia's top-flight football league. The 1998 Copa Merconorte was the 1st edition of association football tournament Copa Merconorte held in 1998. Atlético Nacional of Colombia beat Deportivo Cali also of Colombia in the final. Originally, this tournament was to start on 1 September 1998 (the group stage lasting until 25 November), with 16 teams divided into 4 groups of 4. Those 16 teams included 3 Mexican teams, América, Cruz Azul and Guadalajara. However, the Mexican Football Federation insisted on including Toluca and Necaxa, the two finalists of the 1998 Summer season, instead of América and Guadalajara, who had been chosen for their popular support.
