Ombadja (known as Santa Clara until 1975) is municipality in Cunene Province, Angola. Its seat is the village of Xangongo (known in ancient times as Roçadas). It occupies 12,264 square kilometers and has about 304,964 inhabitants . It is bordered to the north by the municipality of Matala, in the east by the municipalities of Cuvelai, Namacunde, Cuanhama, west by the municipalities of Curoca and Cahama. Humbe
Humbe is a town and Communes of Angola, commune in the municipality of Ombadja, province of Cunene Province, Cunene, Angola. It also used to be the location of a Roman Catholic mission station in southern Angola, located ca. 10 kilometre, km to the north-east of Xangongo, in the tribal area of the Ombadja tribe of the Owambo people, Ovambos. It was located on a tributary of the Kunene River, flowing into this river from the north. Naulila
Naulila is a town and Communes of Angola, commune in the municipality of Ombadja, province of Cunene Province, Cunene, Angola. Located on the Cunene River which separates Angola and Namibia, Naulila was the scene of fighting between Angola (Portugal), Portuguese Angola and German South West Africa during the early stages of World War I. On 19 October 1914, a German military column crossed the border and entered Angola without authorisation from the Portuguese authorities. The column was intercepted by Portuguese forces and conducted to Fort Naulila. At Naulila, a dispute occurred between the Portuguese and the Germans which resulted in the deaths of three German officers. On 31 October, the Germans under the command of Oswald Ostermann retaliated, and raided the Portuguese fort at Cuangar with the use of machine guns, in which the fort was destroyed and the majority of the border guards killed. Namacunde
Namacunde or Namakunde is a town and municipality in Cunene Province in Angola. The municipality had a population of 142,047 in 2014. History as a mission station Namacunde was a mission station of the Rhenish Mission Society in Oukwanyama in southern Angola, located to the south-east of Ondjiva. Namacunde mission was founded in 1900 by the German missionary Wilhelm Ickler. At the time it was thought that the area was part of German South West Africa. Just as Ickler had begun the construction of the third mission German mission station in Oukwanyama, he fell ill with malaria and blackwater fever and died on 22 June 1900. In November 1915 the Germans had to leave Namacunde, as it became the border station between Portuguese West Africa and British South West Africa. Cunene River
The Cunene (Portuguese spelling) or Kunene (common Namibian spelling) is a river in Southern Africa. It flows from the Angola highlands south to the border with Namibia. It then flows west along the border until it reaches the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the few perennial rivers in the region. It is about long, with a drainage basin in area. Its mean annual discharge is 174 m3/s (6,145 cfs) at its mouth. The Epupa Falls lie on the river. Olushandja Dam dams a tributary of the river, the Etaka, and helps provide the Ruacana Power Station with water.
