SK Olympic Handball Gymnasium () is an indoor arena, indoor sporting arena located at the Olympic Park, Seoul, Olympic Park in Bangi-dong, Songpa District, Seoul, South Korea. The arena was built from September 1984 to April 1986. History It was known as the Olympic Fencing Gymnasium () or Olympic Gymnasium No. 2 prior to 2011. The arena hosted the Fencing at the 1988 Summer Olympics, fencing part of the Modern pentathlon at the 1988 Summer Olympics, modern pentathlon events at the 1988 Summer Olympics. In 2011 it was remodelled for handball games at a cost of , specialized with handball only courts. It was renamed as such to host the Handball Korea League, SK Handball Korea League. Bangi-dong () is a ''Dong (administrative division), dong'' (neighborhood) of Songpa District, Seoul, South Korea. Overview Bangi-dong has a historical origin dating back to 1636 during the Joseon period, in the 14th year of King Injo. At that time, amidst the Manchu invasions, King Injo sought refuge in Namhansanseong fortress. The village, then known as Bangigol, played a significant role in defending against Qing soldiers attempting to advance towards Namhansanseong. Local defenders repelled the invaders by shooting arrows and hurling stones from the mountain slopes, thus earning the name "Bangigol," which translates to "blocking the barbarians." Around 1914, scholars at the village's school reinterpreted the characters in the name: changing "bang" () from "defense" to "fragrant," and "i" () from "barbarian" to "white mugwort."
