Oliver Ogedengbe Macaulay
Oliver Ogedengbe Macaulay (15 December 1918 – 14 September 1972), alias Oged Macaulay was a Nigerian politician, archivist, journalist, public relations consultant, and private secretary to Oba Adeyinka Oyekan. He was the son of Herbert Macaulay. Early life and education Oged Macaulay was born on 15 December 1918. However not much is known about Oged's mother, who was possibly Isabella Macaulay, a princess of Akure, since it is unclear whether his father, Herbert Macaulay, remarried after losing his wife, Caroline Pratt in 1899. Oged was an alumnus of CMS Grammar School, Lagos. Career Oged was a journalist whose articles appeared in the West African Pilot. He also served as Assistant Secretary of the NCNC, a political party that was founded by his father, Herbert Macaulay. Adeyinka Oyekan
Adeyinka Oyekan II (30 June 1911 – 1 March 2003) was Oba of Lagos from 1965 to 2003. He was the grandson of Oba Oyekan I. Early life and education Adeyinka's father was a Methodist teacher, Prince Kusanu Abiola Oyekan. Adeyinka Oyekan attended the Methodist Boys High School and King's College, Lagos before studying Pharmacy at Yaba College of Higher Education. A devout Christian, he was a member of the Tinubu Methodist Church and former Sunday School teacher. Career After graduating from Yaba Higher College, Adeyinka was employed at General Hospital, Lagos in 1933. In 1965, Adeyinka was installed Oba and subsequently became a member of the Western House of Chiefs; this was during a crisis in the western region of Nigeria which resulted in loss of lives. Herbert Macaulay
Olayinka Herbert Samuel Heelas Badmus Macaulay (14 November 1864 – 7 May 1946) was a Nigerian nationalist, politician, surveyor, engineer, architect, journalist, and musician and is considered by many Nigerians as the founder of Nigerian nationalism. Early years Herbert Macaulay was born in Broad Street, Lagos, on 14 November 1864 to the family of Thomas Babington Macaulay and Abigail Crowther. His parents were children of people captured from what is now Nigeria, resettled in Sierra Leone by the British West Africa Squadron, and eventual returnees to present day Nigeria. Thomas Babington Macaulay was one of the sons of Ojo Oriare while Abigail Crowther was the daughter of Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther, a descendant of King Abiodun. CMS Grammar School, Lagos
The CMS Grammar School in Bariga, a suburb of Lagos in Lagos State, is the oldest secondary school in Nigeria, founded on 6 June 1859 by the Church Missionary Society. For decades it was the main source of African clergymen and administrators in the Lagos Colony. Foundation The seed funding for CMS Grammar School, Lagos was made possible by James Pinson Labulo Davies who in April 1859 provided Babington Macaulay with £50 (equivalent of ₦1.34 million as of 2014) to buy books and equipment for the school. With the seed funding Macaulay opened CMS Grammar School on 6 June 1859,which made it the first secondary school in Nigeria. In 1867, Davies contributed another £100 (₦2.68 million as of 2014) toward a CMS Grammar School Building Fund. Osita Agwuna
Osita Agwuna (22 December 1921 – 2007) was a Nigerian activist who was deputy president of the Zikist Movement in 1947. He was among a group of young Zikist members who expressed militant criticism of colonial rule and urged concerted action to overcome colonialism. Agwuna later became known as the Eze of Enugu Ukwu, serving the town in that position for 5 decades. Biography Beginning in 1947, the Zikist movement under the leadership of Raji Abdallah and his deputy, Agwuna embraced a radical strategy termed positive action which encouraged civil disobedience to actualize nationalist goals. Two major incidents added fire to this strategy, a racial discrimination incident against a black officer at Bristol hotel and the shooting of Nigerian striking workers in Burutu.
