Adeyinka Oyekan
Adeyinka Oyekan II (30 June 1911 – 1 March 2003) was Oba of Lagos from 1965 to 2003. He was the grandson of Oba Oyekan I. Early life and education Adeyinka's father was a Methodist teacher, Prince Kusanu Abiola Oyekan. Adeyinka Oyekan attended the Methodist Boys' High School, Lagos, and King's College, Lagos before studying Pharmacy at Yaba College of Higher Education. A devout Christian, he was a member of the Tinubu Methodist Church and former Sunday School teacher. Career After graduating from Yaba Higher College, Adeyinka was employed at General Hospital, Lagos in 1933. In 1965, Adeyinka was installed Oba and subsequently became a member of the Western House of Chiefs; this was during a crisis in the western region of Nigeria which resulted in loss of lives. He reigned as Lagos Monarch from 1965 till 2003. Adeyinka Oyekan was the second Christian Oba of Lagos, the first being Ibikunle Akitoye. Oba Of Lagos
The Oba of Lagos, also known as the Eleko of Eko, is the Nigerian traditional rulers, traditional ruler (Oba (ruler), Oba) of Lagos. The Oba is a ceremonial Yoruba people, Yoruba sovereign with no political power, but is sought as a counsel or sponsor by politicians who seek support from the residents of Lagos, the financial heart of Nigeria and the largest city in Africa. Lagos is the largest city in Nigeria, and its former capital; it is the largest city in Africa in terms of population, with about 15.3 million people. It is also the 4th largest economy in Africa. Founded in the 16th century by the Awori people as Eko, it was for centuries a small but important commercial kingdom on the Bight of Benin.
