Oleksiy Ananenko
Oleksiy Mykhailovych Ananenko (; born 13 October 1959) is a Ukrainian mechanical engineer who worked at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Biography After the Chernobyl disaster, he was part of the three-man "suicide squad" that drained the steam suppression pools under the fourth reactor building, since he was very familiar with the layout of the building. Although his feat was quickly forgotten in the wake of the disaster, he was awarded the Order for Courage in 2018 and the title Hero of Ukraine in 2019. Despite media reports claiming the three men died of radiation poisoning shortly after the incident, he survived and lives in Kyiv as of 2019. Hero Of Ukraine
A Hero of Ukraine (HOU; ) is the highest national decoration that can be conferred upon an individual citizen by the president of Ukraine. The decoration was created in 1998 by President Leonid Kuchma. As of 6 June 2025, the total number of recipients had been 1109. Additionally, at least 29 decrees assigned have not been published. Chernobyl Liquidators
Chernobyl liquidators were the civil and military personnel who were called upon to deal with the consequences of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster in the Soviet Union on the site of the event. Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant
The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP) is a nuclear power plant undergoing decommissioning. ChNPP is located near the abandoned city of Pripyat in northern Ukraine, northwest of the city of Chernobyl, from the Belarus–Ukraine border, and about north of Kyiv. The plant was cooled by an engineered pond, fed by the Pripyat River about northwest from its juncture with the Dnieper River. Originally named the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant of V. I. Lenin after the founding leader of the Soviet Union, the plant was commissioned in phases with the four reactors entering commercial operation between 1978 and 1984. On 26 April 1986, the no. 4 reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, located near Pripyat, Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union (now Ukraine), exploded. The Order for Courage () is a Ukrainian award established by Ukrainian president Leonid Kuchma on August 21, 1996. Design by Ukrainian artist Mykola Lebid. Baltasar Breki Samper, sometimes referred to as Baltasar Breki Baltasarsson, is an Icelandic actor. He is known for his role as Hjörtur in the 2015 Icelandic TV series '' Trapped''. Boris Aleksandrovich Baranov (; ; 11 November 1940 — 6 April 2005) was an engineer at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and a Chernobyl liquidator. As a liquidator, he and two others were sent to drain the steam suppression pools under the fourth reactor building, thus preventing the reactor from exploding. Baranov lived almost 20 years after the Chernobyl disaster, passing away due to a heart attack in Kyiv, Ukraine, on 6 April 2005, aged 64.
