''October'' (French - ''Saison d'octobre'') is an 1878 painting by Jules Bastien-Lepage, now in the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. It is also known as ''Picking Potatoes'' (''récolte des pommes de terre''), ''The Potato Gatherers'' or ''Woman Gathering Potatoes''. Bastien-Lepage painted it in his native village of Damvillers, whose name is written in the work's lower-left corner just above the artist's signature. Jules Bastien-Lepage
Jules Bastien-Lepage (1 November 1848 – 10 December 1884) was a French painter closely associated with the beginning of naturalism, an artistic style that emerged from the later phase of the Realist movement. His most famous work is his landscape-style portrait of Joan of Arc which currently resides at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City. Life and work Bastien-Lepage was born in the village of Damvillers, Meuse, and spent his childhood there. Bastien's father grew grapes in a vineyard to support the family. His grandfather also lived in the village; his garden had fruit trees of apple, pear, and peach up against the high walls. Bastien took an early liking to drawing, and his parents fostered his creativity by buying prints of paintings for him to copy. Émile Bastien-Lepage (20 January 1854 – 19 January 1938) was a French painter and architect, younger brother of Jules Bastien-Lepage. His works include ''After the War'', ''The Darling of the Meadow'' and ''Near Damvillers''. Born in Damvillers to Claude Bastien and Adèle Lepage, he studied under Jules, who also painted his portrait in 1879, a work now in the Musée d'Orsay. He was a member of the Société des Artistes Français and exhibited at its salon in 1884 and 1889. He was also a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and exhibited at its salon. In 1889 he also designed a plinth for Auguste Rodin's statue of Jules. George McCulloch (23 April 1848, in Glasgow – 12 December 1907, in London) was a British businessman and art collector who was the mastermind behind the formation of the Broken Hill Mining Company, a precursor of BHP. He was the son of James McCulloch, a contractor, and Isabella Robertson, a farmer's daughter. George's father died of cholera in January 1849 when George was one year old, and he was brought up by his mother, who was assisted by his uncle John Robertson, a farmer.
