Nyköpings Motorstadion or Svanstabanan is a motorcycle speedway track located about 4 kilometres north of the centre of Nyköping. The facility is just off the Kocksängsvägen, adjacent to the Nyköpings motorsällskap, which runs Motocross, Enduro, and motorcycle trials. The stadium hosts the Griparna speedway team that competes in the Swedish Speedway Team Championship and were the 2019 Allsvenskan champions. History Construction on a speedway track began in 1980 by the Nyköping Motorsällskap Association, opening in May 1984. Nyköping () is a Urban areas in Sweden, locality and the seat of Nyköping Municipality, Södermanland County, Sweden, with 32,759 inhabitants as of 2017. The city is also the capital of Södermanland County. Including Arnö, the locality on the southern shore of the bay just a couple of kilometres from the city centre, Nyköping would have above 36,000 inhabitants. Griparna is a motorcycle speedway club from Nyköping in Sweden, who compete in the Allsvenskan (speedway), Allsvenskan. Their home track known as the Svanstabanan is at the Nyköpings Motorstadion which is located to the North of Nyköping. History 1949 to 1950 Griparna Speedway first competed in the Swedish league during the 1949 Swedish speedway season, which was only the second season of organised league speedway in Sweden. However, they only competed for one more season in 1950 Swedish speedway season, 1950 before dropping out of the league for over 30 years. 1984 to 1994 In 1984 Swedish speedway season, 1984, the team returned to compete in the leagues and were placed in division 2 north. Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of soil, dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Motorcycle trials, also known as observed trials, often called simply trial or trials, is a non-speed event on specialized motorcycles. The sport is most popular in the United Kingdom and Spain, though there are participants around the globe. The Swedish Speedway Team Championship is the team championship of motorcycle speedway, speedway in Sweden. History The Championship was introduced in 1950. In 1982 the Championship was renamed with a new league called the Elitserien (speedway), Elitserien being introduced. Allsvenskan (literally, "The National League") is the second tier in the league system of Speedway in Sweden and currently comprises six motorcycle speedway teams. Until the introduction of the Elitserien (speedway), Elitserien in 1982 the Allsvenskan was the highest level of Swedish Speedway. Past winners 2024 Clubs History From the start of Swedish league speedway in 1948 until 1981 the Allsvenskan was the top speedway league in Sweden. But in 1982 the Elitserien was formed and the Allsvenskan became the second level of Swedish speedway. Speedway meetings in Sweden are normally held between May and September. 1989 Individual Speedway World Championship
The 1989 Individual Speedway World Championship was the 44th edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. It was the second time the championship was held in West Germany after previously being held in Norden in 1983. The World Final was held at the Olympic Stadium in Munich. Hans Nielsen made up for his 1988 run-off defeat to Erik Gundersen by scoring a 15-point maximum to take his third World Championship. Nielsen joined fellow Danes Ole Olsen and Erik Gundersen as a three time speedway world champion. Simon Wigg from England finished second with the slick, track suiting his long track style. Wigg defeated fellow Englishman Jeremy Doncaster in a run-off for second and third places.
