Not Lame Recordings was a Ft. Collins, Colorado based independent record label specializing in power pop music. History The label was started by Bruce Brodeen in November 1994 in music, 1994Not Lame Recordings (2010)"About us" Retrieved November 17, 2010. It primarily focused on power pop, a form of guitar and harmony driven retro-rock. Within this genre, the label quickly became the center of a small but ever expanding cult of power pop enthusiasts. Power Pop
Power pop (also typeset as powerpop) is a subgenre of rock music and form of pop rock based on the early music of bands such as the Who, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and the Byrds. It typically incorporates melodic hooks, vocal harmonies, an energetic performance, and cheerful-sounding music underpinned by a sense of yearning, longing, despair, or self-empowerment. The sound is primarily rooted in pop and rock traditions of the early-to-mid 1960s, although some artists have occasionally drawn from later styles such as punk, new wave, glam rock, pub rock, college rock, and neo-psychedelia. Originating in the 1960s, power pop developed mainly among American musicians who came of age during the British Invasion. Hawks (band)
Hawks was a power pop group based in the Fort Dodge, Iowa area from 1979 to 1982. The band consisted of Dave Hearn (keyboards, vocals), Larry Adams (drums), Frank Wiewel (bass, lead vocals), Kirk Kaufman (guitar, vocals) and Dave Steen (guitar, vocals). They released two albums on Columbia Records - ''Hawks'' (rel. 3/81, NJC 36922) and ''30 Seconds Over Otho'' (rel. 7/82, ARC 38058) − while they were together. A third album, ''Perfect World Radio'' (Not Lame Recordings), was released posthumously and was made up of tracks the group had been working on after the second album's release. A cassette-only release entitled ''Hawks III'' (JR-2) was also made available on the Junior's Motel imprint. Hawks was, at the time of their signing with Columbia, the first group to be signed on the strength of an unsolicited demo. A music genre is a conventional category that identifies some pieces of music as belonging to a shared tradition or set of conventions. Genre is to be distinguished from musical form and musical style, although in practice these terms are sometimes used interchangeably. Music can be divided into genres in numerous ways, sometimes broadly and with polarity, e.g., popular music as opposed to art music or folk music, or, as another example, religious music and secular music. Often, however, classification draws on the proliferation of derivative subgenres, fusion genres, and microgenres that has started to accrue, e.g., screamo, country pop, and mumble rap, respectively. The Posies
The Posies were an American rock band. The band was formed in 1986 in Bellingham, Washington, United States, by primary songwriters Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow. Their music has its origins in Merseybeat and the Hollies. They are influenced by Hüsker Dü, XTC, Elvis Costello and Squeeze. The band split up in October 2021, following several allegations of sexual misconduct made against bandmember Ken Stringfellow. History Early years (1986–1988) Core members Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow, who met as students at Sehome High School in Bellingham, Washington, began writing songs together in late 1986 while Stringfellow was in school at the University of Washington. Jellyfish (band)
Jellyfish was an American rock band that formed in San Francisco in 1989. Led by songwriters Andy Sturmer (drums, vocals) and Roger Manning (keyboards, vocals), the group was known for their blend of 1960s classic rock and XTC-style power pop. They released two albums, '' Bellybutton'' (1990) and '' Spilt Milk'' (1993), that proved influential to many subsequent acts in a similar vein. Sturmer and Manning met in high school and shared an admiration for jazz, post-punk, and British pop music. Following a stint as members of Beatnik Beatch, they quit the group to continue songwriting with one another and formed Jellyfish. Wanderlust is an American power pop band of the mid-1990s based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Formation Scot Sax, a native of Philadelphia, had been playing and writing songs since the age of 13, and had actually performed with Rob Bonfiglio a number of times. The lineup was filled by rhythm members Mark Levin on Bass guitar, bass and Jim Cavanaugh on Drum kit, drums, and Wanderlust was formed. ''Prize'' (1995) In 1994, the band began recording a Demo (music), demo at Tongue & Groove Studios in Philadelphia with engineer Mike Musmano. Before the demo was completed the band was signed with RCA Records, RCA. The full length album, ''Prize'', was released in April 1995 to positive critical reviews. In 1997 the band returned to the studio to record a second album, but was dropped from the label and the record was never completed.
