No Heart (chief)
Notchininga, also known as No Heart or No Heart of Fear, was a leader of the Iowa people. History No Heart was brother of Mahaska, or White Cloud, who served as principal chief of the Iowa until his death in 1834. Both Mahaska and No Heart were amenable to Western ways, in particular education, and attempted to live peaceably with their neighbors and the Americans. After Mahaska's death, No Heart served as the leading advisor to Mahaska's son, also named White Cloud. Iowa People
The Iowa, also known as Ioway, and the Bah-Kho-Je or Báxoje (English: grey snow; Chiwere: Báxoje ich'é) are a Native American Siouan people. Today, they are enrolled in either of two federally recognized tribes, the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma and the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska. The Iowa, Missouria, and Otoe tribes were all once part of the Ho-Chunk people; and they are all Chiwere language-speaking peoples. They left their ancestral homelands in Southern Wisconsin for Eastern Iowa, a state that bears their name. In 1837, the Iowa were moved from Iowa to reservations in Brown County, Kansas, and Richardson County, Nebraska. Bands of Iowa moved to Indian Territory in the late 19th century and settled south of Perkins, Oklahoma to become the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma. Name The Ioway tribe is also known as the Báxoje tribe. Mahaska (Native American Leader)
Mahaska (archaic Ioway ''Maxúshga'' pronounced ; contemporary ''Maxúhga''), or White Cloud, (1784–1834) was a chief of the Native American Iowa tribe. His son, also named Mahaska, was better known as Francis White Cloud. Early life and education Mahaska was born into the Iowa tribe. He became chief at an early age after killing several enemy Sioux to avenge his father's death by them. Later Mahaska supposedly killed a French trader in an argument; he was arrested and imprisoned in St. Louis, Missouri. After he escaped, he led a raid against the Osage. Afterward, he decided that his father's death was finally avenged. Mahaska lay down his arms and adopted the lifestyle of the European-American settlers, building a log home and farming. Francis White Cloud
Francis White Cloud (died 1859) was an Ioway chief, also called White Cloud II. He was son of Mahaska. Both father and son were called Mahaska and White Cloud. Francis White Cloud was married to Mary Many Days Robidoux, daughter of French-American fur trader Joseph Robidoux. Their sons, James White Cloud and Jefferson White Cloud, would also be named Ioway chiefs. Francis White Cloud was known in his time for participating in a tour of Europe in 1844 and was painted by George Catlin. Santee Sioux
The Dakota (pronounced , Dakota language: ''Dakȟóta/Dakhóta'') are a Native American tribe and First Nations band government in North America. They compose two of the three main subcultures of the Sioux people, and are typically divided into the Eastern Dakota and the Western Dakota. Sauk People
The Sauk or Sac are a group of Native Americans of the Eastern Woodlands culture group, who lived primarily in the region of what is now Green Bay, Wisconsin, when first encountered by the French in 1667. Their autonym is oθaakiiwaki, and their exonym is Ozaagii(-wag) in Ojibwe. The latter name was transliterated into French and English by colonists of those cultures. Meskwaki
The Meskwaki (sometimes spelled Mesquaki), also known by the European exonyms Fox Indians or the Fox, are a Native American people. They have been closely linked to the Sauk people of the same language family. In the Meskwaki language, the Meskwaki call themselves ', which means "the Red-Earths", related to their creation story. Historically their homelands were in the Great Lakes region. The tribe coalesced in the St. Lawrence River Valley in present-day Ontario, Canada.
