Ningwu–Kelan Railway
Ningwu–Kelan railway or Ningke railway (), is a single-track regional railroad in Shanxi Province of northern China between Ningwu and Kelan Counties. The line is long, and was built between 1967 and 1971 as a national defense railroad to support the building of the Third Front in China's mountainous interior. The Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in Kelan County, a space rocket and strategic missile launch facility, is located along route. Shanxi Province
Shanxi (; ; formerly romanised as Shansi) is a landlocked province of the People's Republic of China and is part of the North China region. Single Track (rail)
A single-track railway is a railway where trains traveling in both directions share the same track. Single track is usually found on lesser-used rail lines, often branch lines, where the level of traffic is not high enough to justify the cost of constructing and maintaining a second track. Advantages and disadvantages Single track is significantly cheaper to build and maintain, but has operational and safety disadvantages. For example, a single-track line that takes 15 minutes to travel through would have capacity for only two trains per hour in each direction safely. By contrast, a double track with signal boxes four minutes apart can allow up to 15 trains per hour in each direction safely, provided all the trains travel at the same speed. Third Front (China)
The Third Front Movement () was a massive industrial development by China in its interior starting in 1964. It involved large-scale investment in national defense, technology, basic industries (including manufacturing, mining, metal, and electricity), transportation and other infrastructure investments. "Third Front" is a geo-military concept: it is relative to the "First Front" area that is close to the potential war fronts. Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center
The Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center (TSLC) also known as ''Base 25'' (), is a People's Republic of China space vehicle, space and defense launch facility (spaceport). It is situated in Kelan County, Xinzhou, Shanxi, Xinzhou, Shanxi Province and is the second of four launch sites having been founded in March 1966 and coming into full operation in 1968. Taiyuan sits at an altitude of 1500 meters and its dry climate makes it an ideal launch site. The site is primarily used to launch meteorological satellites, Earth resource satellites and scientific satellites on Long March (rocket family), Long March launch vehicles into Sun-synchronous orbits. A missile launch facility, also known as an underground missile silo, launch facility (LF), or nuclear silo, is a vertical cylindrical structure constructed underground, for the storage and launching of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), intermediate-range ballistic missiles (IRBMs), medium-range ballistic missiles (MRBMs).
