Niin Kaunis On Taivas
Finland participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 1996 with the song "Niin kaunis on taivas" written by Timo Niemi. The song was performed by the singer Jasmine. The Finnish broadcaster Yleisradio (Yle) returned to the Eurovision Song Contest after a one-year absence following their relegation from 1995 as one of the bottom nine countries in the 1994 contest. Yle organised the national final ''Euroviisut 1996 - Euroviisut ja Emma'' in order to select the Finnish entry for the 1996 contest in Oslo, Norway. Ten entries selected to compete in the national final were presented on 3 February 1996 and votes from the public selected "Niin kaunis on taivas" performed by Jasmine as the winner with 67,907 votes, which was announced during a televised programme on 5 February 1996. Kirill "Kirka" Babitzin (22 September 1950 – 31 January 2007) was one of the most commercially successful Finnish musicians. His career spanned from the late 1960s until his death in 2007. Previously associated with Ilkka Lipsanen's The Islanders band, Kirka went on to record a wide array of rock and pop music. Some of his most famous songs include Hetki Lyö (Beat the Clock), Leijat (Kites) and Varrella virran (Down by the River). Erkki Pohjanheimo (born 28 January 1942) is a Finnish television producer and director. Television career Pohjanheimo joined Yleisradio in 1961 as a television cameraman and worked as a cameraman for five years. In 1966 Pohjanheimo was appointed director of entertainment at TV1 and later became a journalist, screenwriter and editor manager of entertainment. During the 1970s Pohjanheimo produced and directed various music programmes and collaborated with other musicians including The Spencer Davis Group, Cilla Black, Lena Horne, Sarah Vaughan, Benny Goodman and Lionel Hampton. In 1982 he produced and directed a TV concert of Canto General in two parts with Mikis Theodorakis. In 1991 Pohjanheimo did a concert with Montserrat Caballé ja José Carreras for YLE TV1 in Turku. Olli Ahvenlahti (born 6 August 1949, in Helsinki) is a Finnish pianist, composer and conductor. He is of Russian descent. Ahvenlahti succeeded Ossi Runne as the Finnish conductor at the Eurovision Song Contest for the 1990 Contest. In all, he conducted seven entries until the 1998 Contest (after which the orchestra was abolished) - the exceptions being the 1995 Contest and the 1997 Contest in which Finland did not participate. At these contests, Ahvenlahti was part of the Finnish commentary team. Aikakone ( Finnish for time machine) is a Finnish pop music group active from 1995 to 1998 and shortly in 2001 and 2003 as ''Aika''. In 2003, they changed their name back to Aikakone and have since been active on and off. Finland was represented by Kirka, with the song "Hengaillaan", at the 1984 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 5 May in Luxembourg City. "Hengaillaan" was chosen as the Finnish entry at the national final organised by broadcaster Yle and held on 18 February, when Kirka won the Finnish Eurovision ticket at his eighth attempt.
