The Newfoundland Rogues are a Canadian professional minor league basketball team based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The team competes in The Basketball League (TBL). Franchise history Creation and inaugural season The franchise was established in 2021 as an ABA expansion team, headed by Tony Kenny, President of ''2001 Investments Limited''; and coached by Jerry Williams. The team competes in the Basketball League (TBL). The team signed a five-year lease to play their homes games at the Mary Brown's Centre in downtown St. John's. Their first game, as part of the ABA's 2021–22 season, took place on November 27 against the New York State's ''Elmira Eagles'', a fellow member of the league's Northeast Division. The Rogues started the season on an unbeaten streak of six matches,. The Basketball League
The Basketball League (TBL), formerly North America Premier Basketball (NAPB), is a minor league basketball organization. The league began operating in North America in 2018 with eight teams, and expanded to over 44 teams as of 2022. The Basketball League is a professional basketball league providing player salaries from $500 to $6,500 per month, while teams operate on a budget of $125,000 to $250,000 per season. History On July 7, 2017, Sev Hrywnak and Dave Magley announced the formation of a new professional basketball league. American Basketball Association (2000–present)
The American Basketball Association (ABA) is an American semi-professional men's basketball minor league that was founded in 1999. The ABA has teams based in the United States and previously had international teams based in Canada and Mexico. In the past, there were traveling teams from countries such as Australia and Japan who played in the ABA. Additionally, there were players from other countries that were on a U.S. team to showcase other talented athletes in the country. The current ABA bears no relation to the original American Basketball Association (1967–1976) that was considered a major league, and merged with the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1976. Mary Brown's Centre
Mary Brown's Centre (formerly Mile One Centre) is an indoor arena and entertainment venue located in downtown St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The arena opened in May 2001, replacing Memorial Stadium. At full capacity the arena can seat 7,000 people. The arena is the home of the Newfoundland Growlers of the ECHL, and the Newfoundland Rogues of the TBL. Naming rights During construction, the City of St. John's sold the naming rights to brewing company Molson under a 10-year deal valued at $1.5 million. The agreement would have also included rights to be the venue's exclusive beer supplier. Molson then resold the naming rights to Danny Williams, then-owner of Cable Atlantic, for $600,000. Before the arena opened, however, Williams sold Cable Atlantic to Rogers Communications in order to pursue politics, but retained the naming rights personally. Jerry Williams (basketball)
Jerry Williams (born January 2, 1979) is an American former professional basketball player and current head basketball coach for the Newfoundland Rogues (Canada) and former Head coach for the ABA Jacksonville Giants in Jacksonville, Florida (USA). He had a distinguished college and European career, and played in the American Basketball Association (ABA) for 2 seasons , from 2007-2008. He played for the ABA Jacksonville Jam. A 6'6" shooting guard/ small forward from Cumberland College, he was selected to the 2007 ABA All-Star Game. Williams is the only Head Coach in ABA history to win a 3 peat championship in his first 3 years as Head Coach. Williams also was able to 4 peat in 2021 after the season ending in 2020 due to Covid-19, where the Giants were 25 and 1 heading into the playoffs. Minor League
Minor leagues are professional sports leagues which are not regarded as the premier leagues in those sports. Minor league teams tend to play in smaller, less elaborate venues, often competing in smaller cities/markets. This term is used in North America with regard to several organizations competing in various sports. They generally have lesser fan bases, much smaller revenues and salaries, and are used to develop players for bigger leagues.
