New Yorkshire was a musical movement identified by UK music magazine ''NME'' in 2005, in response to the success of Yorkshire bands such as Arctic Monkeys, The Cribs, and Kaiser Chiefs at the time. The bands cited by the magazine included Sheffield guitar-based groups Milburn (band), Milburn, Harrisons, Bromheads Jacket, and The Long Blondes, and Leeds bands The Pigeon Detectives, Your Vegas, The Research, and Black Wire. ''NME'' identified new crossover genres developing in Leeds, which it described as "disco-punk" and "dance-metal". ¡Forward, Russia!, and The Sunshine Underground are examples of this. Yorkshire
Yorkshire ( ) is an area of Northern England which was History of Yorkshire, historically a county. Despite no longer being used for administration, Yorkshire retains a strong regional identity. The county was named after its county town, the city of York. The south-west of Yorkshire is densely populated, and includes the cities of Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, Doncaster and Wakefield. Tiny Dancers were an English band formed in Sheffield by vocalist (and acoustic guitarist) David Kay, guitarist Chris "Ev" Etherington, bassist Dez Wathey, drummer Duncan "Zed" Morrison, and keyboardist (also percussionist and guitarist) David Glover. They formed in 2005 and were later signed to Parlophone. In 2006, they supported various artists such as Bob Dylan and Babyshambles, and released an EP called "Lions and Tigers and Lions". In March 2007, they released their first single "I Will Wait For You". Later that year, they released their sole album '' Free School Milk'' and played at several festivals including Glastonbury. Monkey Swallows The Universe
Monkey Swallows the Universe (MSTU) were an acoustic/indie band from Sheffield, England. Their sound has been described as " folk tinged" and "twee, " and their name comes from an episode of the Japanese TV series ''Monkey''. MSTU were active from 2004 to 2008. History Nat Johnson and Kevin Gori established MSTU in 2003 after meeting at the University of Sheffield. In the band's first incarnation, they both sang and played acoustic guitars, with Gori adding extra touches with instruments such as the recorder and glockenspiel. The band later expanded to include Catherine Tully on violin, Andy George on cello, and Rob Dean on drums, while Johnson became the main singer and songwriter. Stoney (musician)
Stoney (born Mark Stoney 24 May 1980) is a British musician, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer and performer. To date he has released 3 solo albums and six E.P's under his performer name of Stoney. Known for his sharp lyrics and classic melodies, he first came to prominence in the "New Yorkshire" music scene (as the NME would label it) in the mid-2000s touring and working alongside acts such as Arctic Monkeys, Long Blondes and Reverend and the Makers. Following relocation to Austin, Texas in 2009, he became a founding member, songwriter and guitarist of acclaimed "dirt-pop" band Bobby Jealousy, who released two full-length albums between 2012 and 2014, before resuming his solo career back in the UK. Stoney is also an accomplished producer and co-writer for up and coming talent and has worked with Ivor Novello award-winning Guy Chambers, Rick Rubin, Warren Huart and Tim Palmer.
