Duels (band)
Duels were an English indie rock band from Leeds, West Yorkshire, active from 2005 to 2009. Founded by brothers Jon (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Jim Foulger (guitar), along with Jon Maher (bass), James Kirkbright (drums), and Katherine Botterill (keyboards), guitarist Whiskas (formerly of ¡Forward, Russia!) joined in early 2009. — ''The Guardian'' described them as “one of Britain’s most ambitious groups.” History Formation and early singles (2005–2006) Duels formed in 2005 after SammyUSA disbanded, and early demos earned BBC Radio 1 airplay from Zane Lowe and Steve Lamacq. Their debut limited-edition 7″ single, “Potential Futures”, was released via Transgressive Records on 18 July 2005 and was featured on the ''FIFA 06'' soundtrack. They signed to Nude Records in May 2005 and released “Pressure On You” (7 November 2005) and “Animal” (10 April 2006), both charting; “Animal” reached UK No. 47. Leeds
Leeds is a city in West Yorkshire, England. It is the largest settlement in Yorkshire and the administrative centre of the City of Leeds Metropolitan Borough, which is the second most populous district in the United Kingdom. It is built around the River Aire and is in the eastern foothills of the Pennines. The city was a small manorial borough in the 13th century and a market town in the 16th century. It expanded by becoming a major production and trading centre (mainly with wool) in the 17th and 18th centuries. Leeds developed as a mill town during the Industrial Revolution alongside other surrounding villages and towns in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Indie Rock
Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United Kingdom, United States and New Zealand in the early to mid-1980s. Although the term was originally used to describe rock music released through independent record labels, by the 1990s it became more widely associated with the music such bands produced. The sound of indie rock has its origins in the New Zealand Dunedin sound of the Chills, Tall Dwarfs, the Clean and the Verlaines, and early 1980s college rock radio stations who would frequently play jangle pop bands like the Smiths and R.E.M. ''DIY'' is a United Kingdom-based music publication, in print and online. Its free print edition is released monthly with a physical circulation of 40,000 in UK venues, clubs and shops. Nude Records is an independent record label, established in August 1991 in London. The label was set up and operated by Saul Galpern, who had previously worked with artists such as Simply Red, The Fall, Julian Cope, The Triffids, The Slits and Au Pairs. The label filed for voluntary liquidation in December 2001, before it was re-established by Galpern in 2016. Transgressive Records
Transgressive Records is an independent record label based in London, founded in 2004. Its founders, Tim Dellow and Toby L, first met at a Bloc Party gig organised by Toby's Rockfeedback website. The label's debut release was "1am" by the Subways in September 2004, quickly followed by singles from Mystery Jets, the Young Knives and Regina Spektor. Artists on its current roster include Flume, Sophie, Arlo Parks, Alvvays, Julia Jacklin and Damon Albarn. The company also formed Transgressive Management, representing Johnny Flynn, Marika Hackman, Let's Eat Grandma and Wesley Joseph, alongside Transgressive Publishing, working with Black Country, New Road, Foals, Loyle Carner and more.
