New Music Television
New Music Television / New Music TV (NMTV), presented by Marc Almond (of Soft Cell) was a weekly series of 26 half-hour music programmes first aired in the UK at 11:30pm in July 2001 on ITV and ITV2. Each show featured six videos from artists and bands around the world together with an interview with a well known or up-and-coming artist/band. The series was formatted to portray a retro, fun and quirky style. It went on to sell around the world into 48 countries via Southern Star distribution and was responsible for helping to break 24 then unknown artists or bands into the UK top 20. e.g. The White Stripes, Feeder, The Hives and P.J. Harvey. Marc Almond
Peter Mark Sinclair "Marc" Almond, (born 9 July 1957) is an English singer. Almond first began performing and recording in the synthpop/ new wave duo Soft Cell where he became known for his distinctive soulful voice and androgynous image. He has also had a diverse career as a solo artist. His collaborations include a duet with Gene Pitney on the 1989 UK number one single " Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart". Almond's career spanning over four decades has enjoyed critical and commercial acclaim, and he has sold over 30 million records worldwide. He spent a month in a coma after a near-fatal motorcycle accident in 2004 and later became a patron of the brain trauma charity Headway. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2018 New Year Honours for services to arts and culture. ITV2 is a British free-to-air television channel owned by ITV Digital Channels, a division of ITV plc. It was launched on 7 December 1998. For a number of years, it had the largest audience share after the five analogue terrestrial stations, a claim now held by its sister service ITV3 both of which are freely available to a majority of households. Soft Cell
Soft Cell are an English synthpop duo who came to prominence in the early 1980s. The duo consists of vocalist Marc Almond and instrumentalist David Ball. The band are primarily known for their 1981 hit version of " Tainted Love" and their platinum-selling debut album '' Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret''. In the United Kingdom, Soft Cell had twelve top 40 hits, including "Tainted Love" (number 1), " Torch" (number 2), "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye", "What" (both number 3), and " Bedsitter" (number 4). They also had four top 20 albums between 1981 and 1984. In 1984, the duo split; however, they reformed in 2001 to tour and release a new album. The White Stripes
The White Stripes were an American rock duo from Detroit formed in 1997. The group consisted of Jack White (songwriter, vocals, guitar, piano, and mandolin) and Meg White (drums and vocals). Feeder are a Welsh Rock music, rock band formed in Newport, Wales, Newport in 1994. They have released 11 studio albums, 12 compilations, four EPs and 43 singles, spending a combined total of 184 weeks on the singles and albums charts as of 2019, while accumulating 25 top 75 singles between 1997 and 2012.
