Neurofibromin 1
Neurofibromin (NF-1) is a protein that is encoded in humans, in the ''NF1'' gene. ''NF1'' is located on chromosome 17. Neurofibromin, a GTPase-activating protein that negatively regulates RAS/MAPK pathway activity by accelerating the hydrolysis of Ras superfamily, Ras-bound Guanosine triphosphate, GTP. ''NF1'' has a high mutation rate and mutations can alter cellular growth control, and neural development, resulting in various presentations (depending on the specific allele expressed) such as Watson syndrome and Neurofibromatosis type I, neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1, also known as von Recklinghausen syndrome). Ras GTPase
Ras, from "Rat sarcoma virus", is a family of related proteins that are expressed in all animal cell lineages and organs. All Ras protein family members belong to a class of protein called small GTPase, and are involved in transmitting signals within cells ( cellular signal transduction). Ras is the prototypical member of the Ras superfamily of proteins, which are all related in three-dimensional structure and regulate diverse cell behaviours.
