Network for Animals (NFA) is a campaign-directed to animal welfare organization that financially supports and provides logistical help for animal shelters, animal welfare initiatives and raises public awareness about animal issues in Australia, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, Mauritius, Montenegro, the Philippines, South Africa, Serbia, Thailand, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Uruguay, the United States, Zimbabwe, Australia, Malta, and Israel. History Headquartered in the United Kingdom with offices in the United States and South Africa, NFA was founded in 1997 by animal activist Brian Davies. Davies also founded the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) in 1969. Animal Welfare
Animal welfare is the well-being of non-human animals. Formal standards of animal welfare vary between contexts, but are debated mostly by animal welfare groups, legislators, and academics. Animal welfare science uses measures such as longevity, disease, immunosuppression, behavior, physiology, and reproduction, although there is debate about which of these best indicate animal welfare. Respect for animal welfare is often based on the belief that nonhuman animals are sentient and that consideration should be given to their well-being or suffering, especially when they are under the care of humans. These concerns can include how animals are slaughtered for food, how they are used in scientific research, how they are kept (as pets, in zoos, farms, circuses, etc.), and how human activities affect the welfare and survival of wild species. Animal Sanctuary
An animal sanctuary is a facility where animals are brought to live and to be protected for the rest of their lives. Pattrice Jones, co-founder of VINE Sanctuary defines an animal sanctuary as "a safe-enough place or relationship within the continuing hazards that menace everybody". In addition, sanctuaries are an experimental staging ground for transformative human–animal relations. There are five types of animal sanctuaries reflective of the species-belonging of the residents: 1) companion animal sanctuaries; 2) wildlife sanctuaries; 3) exotic animal sanctuaries; 4) farmed animal sanctuaries; and 5) cetacean sanctuaries. Organized Horse Fighting
Organized horse fighting is a blood sport between two stallions which is organized for the purposes of betting or entertainment. Although combat between horses occurs naturally in the wild, death or serious injury in naturally occurring animal fights is almost always avoided by ritualized behaviours or the withdrawal of one of the combatants. Fights often take place in a fenced ring, which prevents the more submissive stallion from retreating, as it would do in a naturally occurring contest. Two stallions and a mare in heat are brought into the ring by human handlers. The mare is then removed, but kept in the vicinity so that her scent lingers, although in some fights she is tethered to a pole at the center of the ring. Political Animal Lobby
Animal Survival International, formerly Political Animal Lobby, is an animal welfare organisation with offices in London, United Kingdom. It was founded in 1990 by animal welfare activist Brian Davies. In the run-up to the 1997 general election it donated one million pounds to the British Labour Party, which was speculated to have been raised through donations to Davies' other organisation, the International Fund for Animal Welfare. It was later suggested that this was tantamount to a bribe, but George Howarth, then-Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Home Office, denied any connection between the donation and the speculated ban on fox-hunting, which was eventually enacted in the UK in 2004. Whitecoat
A whitecoat is a newborn harp or grey seal with soft, white fur. From newborn to whitecoat Newborn seals have yellow fur because of amniotic fluid, and are still wet. When the pup dries, it is called a yellowcoat. The amniotic stain fades and the fur turns white within a few days, and it gets the name whitecoat. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is one of the largest animal welfare and conservation charities in the world. The organization works to rescue individual animals, safeguard populations, preserve habitat, and advocate for greater protections. Brian Davies founded IFAW.
