Naval Air Station Norman
Naval Air Station Norman is a former United States Navy air station. It was also called a Naval Flight Training Center. The air station opened in 1942 as the navy sought to expand its training capacity during World War II. It was co-located at University of Oklahoma Westheimer Airport. After the War, the base was inactivated as the military downsized. The base was reactivated in 1952 and remained open until 1959. The base was turned over to the University of Oklahoma. In 1944, the station fielded a football team called the Zoomers Generation Z (or more commonly Gen Z for short), colloquially known as zoomers, is the Western demographic cohort succeeding Millennials and preceding Generation Alpha. University of Oklahoma Westheimer Airport (Max Westheimer Airport) is a public use airport in Norman, in Cleveland County, Oklahoma. It is owned by the University of Oklahoma. The National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2021–2025 categorized it as a reliever airport. The Cleveland County Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol meets on Tuesday evenings in a hangar provided by the City of Norman, east of the terminal. 1944 Norman Naval Air Station Zoomers Football Team
The 1944 Norman Naval Air Station Zoomers football team represented the Naval Air Station Norman during the 1944 college football season. The station was located in Norman, Oklahoma. The team compiled a 6–0 record, outscored opponents by a total of 144 to 40, and was ranked No. 13 in the final AP Poll. The team won games against major college teams, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Oklahoma A&M. Lt. Commander John Gregg was the team's coach. In the final Litkenhous Ratings, Norman ranked 22nd among the nation's college and service teams and third out of 28 United States Navy teams with a rating of 101.3.
